Poe Meets Hip-Hop: MC Lars Brings "Flow Like Poe" to Nebraska
A 19th-century poet meets a microphone this June. MC Lars—the artist who pioneered "Lit-Hop"—is bringing his one-of-a-kind blend of classic literature and hip-hop to youth across Nebraska, with a four-stop tour running June 23rd through June 26th in Alliance, North Platte, Aurora, and Bellevue.
The tour is sponsored by the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation and the Hamilton County Youth Center.
MC Lars is a hip-hop artist and educator—and a graduate of Stanford and Oxford—who has spent his career making classic literature immediate and relevant for students. He has performed and taught at middle schools, high schools, universities, and arts organizations across the country.
"Flow Like Poe" is built around the work of Edgar Allan Poe, but it's more than a concert. In the writing lab, students pick a short passage from Poe, dig into its images and emotions, and remix it into their own original lyrics, poems, or spoken word. The focus is on close reading and creative response, not passive listening—and all content is age-appropriate, with no explicit language or themes. The public can attend a free performance 4pm Tuesday, June 23rd at the Alliance Recreation Center.
