Our is this magical stele of Horus. Dating to the Ptolemaic Period in ancient Egypt (332-280 BCE), it was thought to protect against dangerous desert animals. The back features a healing spell, while the front depicts the child god Horus and his dominion over these creatures.

In 2025, Ella Egberts received an ASOR Mesopotamian Fellowship to continue archaeological research in the Iraqi Western Desert. During the field season, Ella and her team identified eight new Paleolithic sites in the Shbicha region, including stratified lithic remains that may help establish the first absolute chronological framework for Paleolithic material from the region. Our is a glazed composition amulet representing the head of the demon Pazuzu, discovered in ancient Nineveh. Dating to the Late Iron Age, ca. 700-500 BCE, the front presents a hybrid of lion and goat features, while the back depicts a beardless goat-fish with an ibex-like horn.

Applications are now open for 2027–2028 fellowships at the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem!

The Albright brings US, Israeli, Palestinian and other international scholars together in the shared pursuit of research excellence. We welcome applications in the humanities and social sciences on the southern Levant, from deep prehistory to the Early Modern period, including museum studies and heritage management.

Fellowships are available for doctoral students, recent PhDs and senior scholars. Awards include room and half-board at the Institute, with the remainder paid as a research stipend. Eligibility varies by award.

References are due December 5, 2026, and applications close December 6, 2026.
