Gettysburg, 2026.

For three days we marched the same roads, slept beneath the same stars, drilled, cooked, sang, and stood on the very ground where American Soldiers, to include those of the Irish Brigade, fought and sacrificed to preserve the nation and secure the freedom of their fellow man.

Throngs of visitors stopped to ask questions, experience camp life, and connect with the stories of the men we portray.

In a world increasingly shaped by screens and artificial intelligence, there is something refreshing about real wool, real campfires, real friendships, real conversations, and the sights, sounds, and smells of history brought back to life.

These photographs capture only a small part of the experience, but they remind us why we do this.

History remembered.
History experienced.
Their story.
Our responsibility.

On to the Fairfax 4th of July parade!

If there is a sound that belongs to the night before a battle, it may be men gathered around a fire quietly singing “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah.”

Beneath the Pennsylvania Memorial, with the stars overhead, crickets in the grass, and the fire slowly burning down, it becomes easy to imagine thousands of soldiers spending one final evening together before the fighting began.

No drill. No commands. Just the songs that carried them through the war.

This is one of the best parts of the hobby - being able to spend the night on the battlefields themselves.

🇺🇸The Column Grows☘️

From our bivouac behind the Pennsylvania Monument to our firing demonstration area near the 1st Minnesota Monument, the 28th Massachusetts stepped off once again….

But what started as a company of Federal soldiers quickly became something more.

As we marched, visitors joined in behind the ranks.

Families, spectators, and park visitors fell in with the column, and one of our corporals helped “march” them across the battlefield with us.

Moments like this are why we do what we do. Not just to wear the uniform, but to help people experience history in a way that books and signs alone never can.

Gettysburg. June 2026.

Before every firing demonstration, the men of the 28th Massachusetts go through a critical safety inspection - that is NPS rules but also common sense (these are real guns) and period correct (it’s in Casey’s!)

Known as Inspection Arms, this period correct drill allows officers, NCOs, and NPS staff to examine each musket to ensure it is safe, functional, and free of any live ammunition before the public program begins.

In this clip, Gettysburg National Military Park Ranger Matt Atkinson inspects the line prior to taking the field for our first firing demo.

The video closes with a look across our camp, our friends of the The Dorcas Society of Reedy Point, and the Pennsylvania Monument overlooking Gettysburg.

The details matter. The safety matters. The authenticity matters.

On Site at Gettysburg

We’re setting up and ready to go. Look at this weather! It doesn’t get better than this.

You can find the 28th Massachusetts camp just behind the Pennsylvania Monument - the largest monument on the field.

If you know the landmarks in the video - shout ‘em out! Everyone is a Gettysburg geek deep down.

If you’re visiting Gettysburg this weekend, stop by and say hello!

Firing demonstrations:
🔹 Saturday: 10 AM, 12 PM, & 2 PM
🔹 Sunday: 10 AM & 12 PM

If you’ve found us through social media, we’d especially love to meet you. Come see the camp, watch a demonstration, and learn a little history with us.

We’ll be here through Sunday. Faugh a Ballagh! 🇮🇪🇺🇸

Gettysburg After Dark

In two days, we’ll once again pitch our tents on some of the most historic and hallowed ground in America.

As lightning illuminates the 1st Minnesota Monument on Cemetery Ridge, it’s a reminder that Gettysburg is unlike any other place in our hobby. History is never far away.

Not a bad view from camp.

Gettysburg. June 12–14.

Note: The park closes to the public at sunset - but as part of an official NPS living history program we get the honor of camping out on various battlefields, such as Gettysburg, Bull Run, Monacacy, etc. This is one of the coolest aspects of the hobby and allows us to connect to battlefields in ways most can’t. For Gettysburg NPS Union Living History Programs the bivouac site is directly behind the Pennsylvania Monument. Come see us!

🇺🇸 Our Friends: The Dorcas Society of Reedy Point 🇺🇸 Meet them this weekend at our Gettysburg event!

As the 28th Massachusetts continues to grow, we’ve seen a steady increase in interest around authentic civilian impressions - and that’s a great thing.

We are mainly a military-focused organization, but some of our members’ wives and daughters are already part of an outstanding organization dedicated to doing just that: the Dorcas Society of Reedy Point.

This is a female-only civilian impression group focused on authenticity, education, and bringing the civilian side of the 1860s to life with the same level of dedication we expect in the field.

If you’ve been asking about getting started in a civilian impression, or looking for a group that aligns closely with the standards and culture of the 28th - this is an excellent place to start!

They'll be joining us for our upcoming Gettysburg Living History this weekend.
