Lansana Sheriff, widely known by his stage name Steady Bongo, was born in Daru, a rural town in Kailahun District, Eastern Sierra Leone. He was born into a culturally rich family with a Mandingo father and a Mende mother, which influenced his musical style and identity. Growing up in a predominantly Mende-speaking household, Steady Bongo developed a love for music at a young age, drawing inspiration from legendary artists such as Big Fayia, Samile, Eric Donaldson, and Prince Nico Mbarga.

His career began early when he hosted the popular radio program "Variety Time" at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS), which showcased his charisma and musical talent.
In 1990, Steady Bongo released his groundbreaking debut album, "Ready Before You Married," which gained immense popularity in Sierra Leone and neighboring countries, cementing his status as a musical icon.

Steady Bongo's second album, "Kormot Bi En Me" (1996), elevated his career further, winning the Best Album Award and achieving record-breaking sales. It became the first Sierra Leonean album to be released on CD in the United States, highlighting his role in introducing Sierra Leonean music to an international audience.
In 1998, he released "Welcome to Democracy Na Salone," reflecting the sociopolitical landscape of post-war Sierra Leone, followed by "Born for Suffer" in 1999, which resonated with themes of resilience and hope.

Recognized as a pioneer in Sierra Leonean music, he was instrumental in blending traditional Sierra Leonean sounds with global influences, making his work resonate both locally and internationally.
Tragically, Steady Bongo passed๐Ÿ˜ญ away in a traffic accident in Liberia on December 7th, 2024, at the age of 58.
His legacy will continue to inspire many.

Rest in peace ๐Ÿ•Š, legend.
Your music and impact will forever remain in our hearts.
(28th August 1966 โ€“ 7th December 2024)
