What does it actually mean to build for resilience?

Resilient infrastructure is designed to withstand, adapt to, and recover from challenges such as severe weather, natural disasters, and changing environmental conditions while continuing to serve the communities that depend on it.

Concrete plays an important role in creating durable infrastructure built for long-term performance.

At the Concrete Advancement Foundation, supporting research and innovation that contribute to more resilient communities and infrastructure is an important part of our mission.

Happy National Dog Day from the Concrete Advancement Foundation! 🐾

Today, we're celebrating the four-legged friends who make our days a little brighter — whether they're keeping us company at home, greeting us after a long day, or supervising our work with absolutely no relevant qualifications. 😂

Share a photo of your favorite canine coworker in the comments so we can celebrate them, too!

Building the future of the concrete industry starts with preparing the next generation of leaders.

Programs like CIM at Chico State give students the education and real-world skills they need to pursue careers throughout the concrete industry, from project management and operations to sales, leadership, and beyond.

Supporting education and workforce development is an important part of the Concrete Advancement Foundation’s mission, helping ensure our industry has the skilled, knowledgeable leaders it needs for the future.

🥸 What do they call me?
✔️ Project Manager!

🧐 What do I do?

Concrete has long played a critical role in building the resilient communities and infrastructure we rely on every day.

The story of Seattle’s Space Needle is a great example of how innovation, engineering, and concrete come together to create structures designed to stand the test of time. It’s also a reminder of why the Concrete Advancement Foundation continues to support research and projects that advance concrete innovation, resilience, and sustainable construction.

NRMCA’s America250 campaign is a great opportunity to look back at the role concrete has played in shaping our communities and building the infrastructure that continues to serve them today.

Seattle’s Most Famous Landmark - Anchored in Concrete!

This week in National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s America250: Concrete – The Foundation of Our Nation campaign, we’re looking back at the concrete engineering behind the iconic Seattle Space Needle: https://www.nrmca.org/space-needle/

Rising 605 feet above the city, the Seattle Space Needle is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, it was once the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.

On May 22, 1961, ready mix trucks made 467 trips over 12 continuous hours, placing 2,800 cubic yards of concrete without interruption. At the time, it was the largest continuous concrete placement in the West. The foundation ultimately weighed 5,850 tons, equal to the weight of the entire structure above it.

This heavy underground block anchored the structure so deeply that the Space Needle’s center of gravity is actually below ground level. This engineering design keeps the tower highly stable against earthquakes and high coastal winds - built to withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour with swaying of only one inch per ten mph, and earthquakes of up to 9.0 magnitude.

The concrete was supplied by Pioneer Sand & Gravel, which later became Glacier Northwest and ultimately joined with California Portland Cement Company to form today’s NRMCA member CalPortland.

More than six decades later, the Space Needle remains a defining piece of the Seattle skyline — and a testament to the concrete foundation making its unmistakable design possible. 🏙️
