New Mexicans deserve access to quality healthcare systems, affordable and transparent insurance, and services like housing, childcare, and even rideshares that are safe and deliver on what they promise to do. Most of us choose a doctor based on location, reputation, or whether they take our insurance. Very few of us ever find out who actually owns the practice.

That gap matters. Out-of-state corporations and private equity firms are buying clinics, hospitals, and medical groups, often with no visible sign that anything has changed for patients.

Transparency is the first of four solutions that doctors, researchers, and health care workers point to for holding private equity accountable in health care. Watch to see how other states and Congress are moving to make ownership public, and why knowing about a deal is only the first step.

Today we're honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day by lifting up a partnership that shapes this work: NMSOP stands alongside NM Native Vote and Indigenous Women Rising in the fight for corporate accountability in New Mexico's healthcare system.

Safe, accountable care means little without a way to hold hospitals and insurers responsible when that care falls short. Protecting our right to seek justice is part of what we fight for, alongside our coalition partners.

We need systems in place that protect the people who live here and work here — not the industries with the biggest lobbying budgets.
