Content warning: this post discusses pregnancy complications and the death of a mother.

New Mexico has more private equity-owned hospitals than any other state — 36%, compared to a national average of 8%. Research links private equity ownership directly to worse patient outcomes.

Lovelace Women's Hospital is run by Ardent Health, a private equity-backed, billion-dollar corporation. At least 23 lawsuits have been filed against its maternity ward since 2011, including one from the family of Ashley Griego, who died in 2023, two days after a scheduled induction.

When investors own hospitals, patients compete with shareholders for the same dollar. New Mexico families deserve care accountable to them — not to private equity.

We grieve alongside these New Mexican families and will walk with them in their fight for accountability. Your stories matter too. Tell us in the comments or visit the link in our bio to share with us.

New Mexicans deserve honesty from the companies we rely on every day — whether it's the food we eat or who we trust to give us a ride.

Uber didn't hold up their end. Internal records showed roughly 400,000 reports of sexual assault or misconduct tied to its rides over five years, while the company only disclosed 12,522 of those publicly. Uber's own safety experts built tools that could have flagged risky drivers and reduced assaults — but the company shelved them.

That's not a company that made a mistake. That's a company that made a choice, and hoped we'd never find out.

Goldman Sachs Alternatives now owns a piece of New Mexico's behavioral health system.

This year, the PE firm's Center for Social Dynamics acquired New Mexico autism provider Behavior Change Institute — one more facility in a growing pattern of PE ownership in behavioral health.

New Mexico legislators have made historic investments to expand behavioral health care because it saves lives. That care depends on trust and continuity — not investor returns.

Who's deciding what your family's care looks like? What do you want your legislators to know?

Healing should never be a profit center.

New Mexico's rideshare law hasn't changed much since 2016. Back then, the question was simply "how do we let Uber and Lyft operate here?" Ten years later, states like Colorado have moved on to a much more pressing question: how do we put guardrails in place to prevent riders and drivers from getting hurt?

Colorado's new Rideshare Safety and Accountability Act adds restrictions New Mexico still doesn't require — recurring background checks, protections against shared or rented driver accounts, and mandatory survivor notification, to name a few. Colorado’s State Representative Jenny Willford bravely shared her story of being assaulted in an Uber to highlight the need for stricter enforcement.

If you have a story about feeling unsafe in an Uber, your real-world example can help change the minds of legislators. Please share your story with us here:

The DARVO strategy of abuse has been around for a long time, and Uber has been moving through it in a predictable pattern.

First, they denied. Uber's own records show 400,000+ reports of sexual assault or misconduct between 2017–2022 — and they only told the public about 12,500. Then, they went on the attack, lobbying Congress to pass the Fong Amendment which would pre-emptively let Uber off the hook for any harm that happens to either riders or drivers during a ride.

And now they’re reversing the victim and the offender: a stunning New York Times investigation into an assault in Florida found that a woman who allegedly suffered a horrific attack by her Uber driver was repeatedly pressed by the company’s lawyers about her role in the assault.

We shouldn't have to use terms like victim and abuser when we are discussing consumer protection issues. But we have to call a spade a spade, and what these incidents add up to is a company that is very publicly touting itself as the safest rideshare option while sweeping any evidence to the contrary under the rug.

New Mexico's Public Regulation Commission approved the $1.25 billion sale of NM Gas Co. to Bernhard Capital Partners in a split 2-1 vote. Environmental groups, consumer advocates, and the state Department of Justice all opposed the deal.

We're also watching Blackstone's bid to buy PNM. Share this with your neighbors, and ask your legislators what oversight exists when private equity buys up essential services.

When a company very publicly calls itself as the safe option, we have an expectation that they’ll back up their claims. Instead, Uber has underreported safety violations during their rides — their own records show 400,000+ reports of sexual assault or misconduct between 2017–2022, but they only told the public about 12,500. They have pushed Congress to pass the Fong Amendment, which would pre-emptively absolve them of responsibility for harm that happens to either passengers or drivers on a ride.

And now, finally, they’ve turned to attacking a victim who was harmed using their product by using the oldest question in the book, “What was she wearing?”. A stunning New York Times investigation turned up aggressive, inappropriate tactics used to question an alleged assault victim in Florida and suggest she had a role in her horrific attack.

A company that is serious about safety wouldn't be lashing out when it’s called to the carpet. It would be taking responsibility for the product it promises the public.

The part of health insurance we care about is getting help when we’re sick. The part big insurers care about is their profit margin. This year, only one of us got what they wanted.

Here's what everyday people struggled through for the sake of insurance company profits: higher premiums, shrinking benefits, narrower networks, and over 4 million people dropped from coverage in a single year. One insurer said it outright — their strategy is "margins over membership."

New Mexicans deserve a health care system that puts patients first, not one that treats them as a line item on a budget. That's why NM Safety Over Profit exists: to hold corporate healthcare accountable and keep the focus where it belongs — on people, not profit margins.

Most people have heard about private equity buying hospitals. It didn't stop there.

Private equity now owns mental health services, dental practices, urgent care clinics, specialty medicine, vision care, emergency transportation — even veterinary care.

New Mexico is part of that story.

Over the next few weeks, we're looking at how ownership is changing the healthcare systems families rely on every day, and why accountability and patient safety matter.

Healthcare should serve New Mexicans, not investors.

A trend is taking over social media where people are playing fake calls just to feel safe in a ride they paid for. That's not a life hack, that's riders doing Uber's job for them.

Uber's own records show 400,000+ reports of sexual assault or misconduct between 2017–2022 — and they only told the public about 12,500. Uber claims they’re implementing safety measures while at the same time asking Congress to pass the Fong Amendment to help shield them from responsibility.

As consumers and workers, we want convenient and accessible public transportation options, but we shouldn’t have to rely on regressive “life hacks” to stay safe. We deserve services that take responsibility and do the work to ensure our safety.

Share if trust and safety are what you should be able to expect, especially when it’s the service you’ve been promised.
