Water. Power. Heating and Cooling. Essential services.

These aren’t luxury products. They’re public necessities.

But private equity sees utilities as another place to extract profit.
When essential services become investment vehicles, communities can be left with higher costs, weaker accountability, and greater risk.

New Mexicans deserve reliability, transparency, and services built for people, not profit.

Buy. Strip. Flip.
New Mexicans pay the price.

This week, the New Mexico Department of Justice announced charges against a woman accused of impersonating a nurse and providing care in multiple Las Cruces facilities – including allegations of abuse, fraud, and conduct that nearly resulted in a patient's death. Three of the identified facilities this person worked for are owned and operated by private equity groups. Including Genisis HealthCare, one of the most notorious companies known for dangerous and deadly practices.

As we've shared in , New Mexicans are already seeing the consequences when cost-cutting and weakened oversight put profits over people.

Our elders and patients deserve safety, dignity, and real care – not systems stretched so thin that dangerous failures can happen.

Patient safety must come first. Accountability matters. And caring for vulnerable people is a core New Mexico value.

We appreciate the work of the Medicaid Fraud and Elder Abuse Bureau and the Attorney General’s office to investigate these serious allegations and protect New Mexicans.

Feliz Rael has seen the harm up close and personal, having represented New Mexican families who have lived through the consequences of this model.

We’re proud of the New Mexicans who support the work of New Mexico Safety Over Profit. As part of our commitment to transparency, we’re highlighting some of the people who stand with us in the fight for accountability and consumer protections across the systems that affect New Mexicans’ lives.

Meet Kathy Love. For decades, Kathy has stood with people who have been harmed by powerful systems – fighting to hold corporations and institutions accountable when they put profit over people.

Her work reflects a deep commitment to justice and dignity. From representing individuals harmed by medical negligence to advancing reproductive rights and access to justice, Kathy has spent her career making sure people are heard, protected, and supported.

She believes that when harm is ignored or hidden, it continues – but when people are heard, systems can change.

We’re grateful for Kathy’s support and her commitment to amplifying the voices of those who have been harmed.

Private equity is already inside New Mexico’s nursing homes.

About 1 in 3 facilities are controlled by firms whose business model depends on cutting costs and maximizing profits - not improving care.

We’ve seen what that looks like: fewer staff, reduced services, and families reporting neglect and harm.

In one case, a private equity-backed chain operating in New Mexico paid millions to executives - then claimed it couldn’t afford care and filed for bankruptcy.
Our elders are already vulnerable.

Failing to care for them is not just bad policy - it’s out of step with New Mexico values.

Nursing homes should provide safety, dignity, and care - not serve as short-term investments.

If you've struggled to access fair compensation or felt like your rights as a consumer weren't being honored, click the link below.

Across New Mexico, something is quietly reshaping the systems we rely on every day – housing, healthcare, childcare, utilities, and more.

In a new op-ed, NMSOP Executive Director Johana Bencomo breaks down the private equity model driving these changes and why it matters for New Mexican families.

From rising housing costs to declining healthcare access, this isn’t about one industry. It’s about a profits-over-people model that is changing essential services across our state.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the moms who have turned pain into advocacy for other New Mexico families.

These mothers shared their stories to help protect other parents and children from preventable harm – and we’re grateful for their courage and determination.

Today and every day, we honor the moms fighting for justice, accountability, and safer communities for all of us. 💐

Too many New Mexicans have faced a crisis, turned to their insurance company for help, and hit wall after wall instead. Whether it’s your health insurance, home, fire, flood, or auto, it’s the same playbook for every industry. You deserve better.
If you've ever felt like the system was designed to work against you, you're not imagining it.

But your story has the power to change things. When real people share what they've been through, it gives us the evidence we need to fight for consumer protections that work for New Mexicans. If you’ve been through it, we want to hear from you.
