Content note: this post discusses su***de prevention.

September is Su***de Prevention Month and for over a decade, Breaking the Silence New Mexico has worked to end the stigma, shame, and silence around mental illness and su***de. Through mental health literacy, su***de prevention training, and personal stories, every conversation BTSNM starts is one less person facing this alone. Their “Talking Mental Health” curriculum brings this work directly into NM classrooms, changing how mental health is discussed, and their Youth Advisory Group makes sure the young people living this are the ones shaping how it's taught.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available right now: call or text 988, or call the NM Crisis Line at 1-855-662-7474.

Who shows up for New Mexico's transgender community every day of the year?

August is Transgender History Month and New Mexico is one of the most legally protective states in the country for transgender residents, built by two decades of advocacy: from the 2005 Human Rights Act update banning discrimination based on gender identity, to the 2019 Vital Records Modernization Act that simplified how New Mexicans update the gender marker on a birth certificate or driver's license.

Since 2008, the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico has carried that legacy forward. Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico is the state's only organization dedicated solely to serving transgender and non-binary New Mexicans and their families, offering everything from ID document help to emergency financial assistance to nine peer-led support groups. They've also trained tens of thousands of people across the state through their Transgender Cultural Fluency program. This is who gets it done for New Mexico.

Unethical online fundraising platforms are operating without nonprofit consent, charging hidden fees, and withholding funds from the communities nonprofits serve every day. This is a challenge affecting organizations across our sector and we want to make sure our members have the information and tools to respond.

National Council of Nonprofits and 52 state and regional associations have released new national principles to address this issue head on. Their free webinar on July 30 will walk organizations through what these principles mean in practice and how to protect your mission, your brand, and your donor relationships.

Register today and join the conversation.
