We want to address a troubling trend we are seeing: animal abandonment is increasing, and it must stop.

This week alone, Moriarty Animal Control is investigating a case involving a shepherd-type dog that jumped from a vehicle at a local hotel and was left behind by its owner. We have also received reports and threats from individuals outside our jurisdiction stating they intend to drop unwanted animals off within city limits.

This is the perfect opportunity to discuss what you should do if you witness someone abandoning an animal.

1. Document the incident.
If it is safe to do so, take photos or video of the person, the animal, and the vehicle involved. A full license plate is ideal, but even partial plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, or clear images can help. We will use every piece of available evidence to identify the responsible party.

2. Contact Moriarty Animal Control immediately.
Abandoned pets are often frightened and disoriented. Many will chase after the vehicle that left them, running into traffic and putting themselves and others at risk. What may seem like “setting them free” often results in injury, suffering, or death.

Let us be very clear: abandoning an animal within Moriarty city limits is a violation of the law. Individuals caught dumping animals can be cited into court and held responsible for the costs associated with the animal’s care.

As the saying goes:

“Dump a pet, pick up a court date.”

If you live within our jurisdiction and can no longer care for your pet, please first attempt to rehome it responsibly or contact local rescue organizations. If those options are unsuccessful, contact Moriarty Animal Control to discuss available resources. Surrendering an animal through the proper channels is always more humane than abandoning it.

If you live outside our jurisdiction and your community lacks animal services, bringing your animal to Moriarty and leaving it here is not a solution. It places an unnecessary burden on local resources, endangers public safety, and shifts the cost of care onto Moriarty taxpayers. Instead, we encourage you to contact your local elected officials and advocate for improved animal services in your own community.
