Selinda Guerrero is a pillar of our organizing community who has spent decades fighting for our people on Tiwa lands.

As a co-founder of Albuquerque Mutual Aid and a leader with Millions for Prisoners and Save the Kids from Incarceration, Selinda has spent years building community, fighting incarceration and state violence, organizing for our people, and showing up when our communities needed her most.

Now, it’s our turn to show up for Selinda.

Selinda recently underwent major brain surgery to remove a complex tumor and is now facing a long road of healing and recovery. On Sunday, October 18, we’re coming together to surround her with the same love, care, and solidarity she has given our communities for decades.

On Monday evening, community members gathered at Central and San Mateo to mourn the life of Robert “Chuco” Salas and stand with the family he left behind.

In this video, Robert’s partner, Monique, shares her grief, her memories, and the pain of losing someone she loved.

As the public debates the final moments of Robert’s life, Monique reminds us that there is a family carrying this loss every day. A family that deserved more time. A family still searching for answers.

UPDATE: The zoning hearing on the proposed mosque and community center has been postponed after anti-Muslim extremists flooded today’s Bernalillo County Commission meeting with hateful rhetoric and public comments.

The Commission has now rescheduled consideration of the proposal to July 1, 2026 at 9:00 AM via Zoom, where community members will once again have the opportunity to speak in support of or opposition to the project.

Let’s be clear: a house of worship and community center should not have to fight through a gauntlet of bigotry to exist in our community. Albuquerque is stronger because of our diversity, and our Muslim neighbors deserve the same right to gather, worship, and build community as anyone else.

We encourage community members to show up, speak out, and stand in solidarity with our local Muslim community on July 1st.

Today, APD released less than one minute of edited body camera footage related to the killing of Robert “Chuco” Salas.

Within hours, many were already treating those final moments as the complete story.

They are not.

The footage released by APD does not show the initial contact between officers and Robert. It does not show what led to the pursuit. It does not show what conversations took place between officers. It does not show what efforts, if any, were made to de-escalate the situation before deadly force was used.

As more details continue to emerge about APD’s alleged decades-long DWI corruption scandal, a scheme that investigators believe operated within the department for nearly 30 years, public trust has been deeply shaken. APD’s history of misconduct, excessive force, and corruption warrants scrutiny of every officer-involved shooting, not blind acceptance of official narratives.

What we do see in the roughly 50 seconds of footage that was released raises serious questions.

We acknowledge that Robert appeared to pose a danger in those final moments. But those final moments are not the entire story. Less than a minute of edited footage cannot answer the many questions that remain about the events, decisions, and circumstances that led to his death.

Robert was more than the way he died.

He was a father. A son. A brother. A friend.

His family deserves transparency. Our community deserves answers. And the public deserves access to the complete record, not just carefully selected clips released by the agency responsible for his death.

We continue to uplift the demands of Robert’s family, including the immediate termination of the officers involved and the release of all available body camera footage, surveillance footage, dispatch recordings, reports, and records related to this incident.

Less than one minute of edited footage is not transparency.

BREAKING: APD has shot another community member.

According to initial reporting, Albuquerque Police shot another person this evening in northeast Albuquerque. If confirmed, this would mark the fourth community member shot by APD in just nine days.

In the last week and a half, Albuquerque families have been forced to process a staggering number of police shootings, including the deaths of Robert Salas and Jose Armas.

Details surrounding this latest shooting are still emerging, and we will continue monitoring the situation as more information becomes available.

Robert “Chuco” Salas was so much more than a rap sheet.

He was a father to three beautiful daughters. A partner. A brother. A friend. A mentor. A role model to countless young men fighting for their lives and recovery at Anchor Recovery.

His oldest daughter, Nevaeh, is devastated by this loss.

After months of uncertainty, Chuco had finally gotten good news. His charges had been dropped. He was preparing to return home to El Paso, reunite with his daughters, and begin the next chapter of his life surrounded by the people who loved him most.

He never got that chance.

Instead, Albuquerque police spent days surveilling him. Then, in the amount of time it takes for the light at Central and San Mateo to change from red to green, officers chased Chuco across the street and opened fire.

In less than two minutes, Robert Salas was dead.

We’re constantly told that police violence is a last resort. That officers exhaust every option before taking a life. But what meaningful de-escalation can happen in less than two minutes? What opportunity was there for communication, distance, patience, or understanding?

Before he became a headline, Robert Salas was a human being. His life mattered. His daughters deserved more time with their father. His loved ones deserved more time with him.

95 people.

Since 2010, Albuquerque Police have shot at least 156 people, killing at least 95 of them.

Those numbers aren’t just statistics. They are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, siblings, friends, neighbors, and loved ones whose absence is still felt every day by the people who knew them.

From Christopher Torres and Alan Gomez, to James Boyd, Brett Rosenau, Matthew “Solo” Garcia, Jose Armas, and Robert “Chuco” Salas, the names span multiple mayors, police chiefs, administrations, and promises of reform. Yet families continue to gather at vigils, demand answers, and fight for accountability while new names are added to the list.

On Friday, June 5th, we will gather not only to demand accountability for the lives taken by police violence, but to remember those we have lost and stand alongside the families who continue carrying that grief.

Bring photos. Bring flowers. Bring candles. Bring the names of your loved ones.

Because no one should be reduced to a headline, a case number, or a statistic.

Justice for Robert Salas.

Tonight, we gather to honor Robert’s life and stand with the people who loved him.

Before he became a headline, Robert was a father, a son, a community member, and a friend. He was loved. His life mattered. His loved ones deserved more time with him.

No past, no allegation, and no mistake can justify the violence that took Robert’s life. Police officers do not get to act as the jury, judge, and executioner.

While we gather tonight in Albuquerque, Robert’s family and loved ones in El Paso will be holding a vigil of their own. Two communities will come together to mourn the same loss, honor the same life, and demand the same thing: justice.

Thank you to everyone who came out tonight to honor the life and memory of Juniper Blessing and to hold space for every trans person lost to violence.

Seeing so many people gather in community, grief, love, and solidarity was deeply moving. From New Mexico to Seattle, Juniper’s life touched so many people, and tonight was a reminder that she will not be forgotten.

At a time when trans people are facing increasing violence, hatred, and dehumanization, moments like this matter.

Thank you to everyone who brought candles, flowers, stories, tears, and care into this space. Please continue checking in on your trans loved ones and fighting for a world where trans people can live safely, openly, and fully.

Join us as we gather in the face of anti-trans violence to honor the life and memory of Juniper Blessing, a young trans woman whose life was taken far too soon.

Juniper graduated from the New Mexico School for the Arts in 2024 and was studying atmospheric science at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her loss is being felt by friends, classmates, loved ones, and communities across New Mexico and beyond.

This candle-lit vigil is a space for grief, remembrance, love, and collective care. We will come together not only to honor Juniper, but every trans person lost to violence, hatred, and systemic neglect.

In a time when trans people are increasingly targeted, demonized, and harmed, it is more important than ever that we show up for one another and refuse to let trans lives be forgotten.

Please bring candles, flowers, and loved ones as we hold space together in silence, reflection, and solidarity.
