Do we recognize that "typical" breastfeeding may not be the healthiest breastfeeding /weaning cycle? With the increase in obstructive sleep apnea, and the OSA induced strokes, we may need to re-evaluate the American stance on the *act* of breastfeeding. Because babies who receive formula via a supplemental nursing system reap most of the same benefits of exclusively breastfed babies, yet infants fed breast milk out of a bottle, do not.

NM, and especially Albuquerque, is in mourning for the passing of a great doctor, and a greater man.

Our condolences go out to Dr. Clayton's family as we all gather today to remember the impact he has had on so many children's lives.

His obituary is included in the comments.

The latest research into child development says punishing is detrimental to a child's health.

Rewarding positive behavior and utilizing positive reinforcement is key to healthy children, and later healthy adults.

There is also healthy positive reinforcement that helps a child develop intrinsic motivation, and unhealthy rewards.

When children clean, or "come clean", the best positive reinforcement is actually to ask them (to close their eyes if they are younger and then ask) "how do you feel now? How does your tummy feel? Your heart? Your throat? I want you to make choices so you can feel this good all the time!"

If they have cleaned a room, and haven't done the best job yet, tell them you can already see a difference, followed with "is there anything in here (or pick a specific location if there is still a lot to improve. ..like the bed) that you think you could do even better?"

Once they have improved it, ask them how they feel (see above). If there are more sections that need to be improved, repeat the process in *each* section.

You will be amazed at how quickly this works!

You will be more amazed at how much easier they are to talk to, and how much more pleasant the "terrible twos" and teens become (developmentally, there is almost no difference between teen thinking and two year old thinking, as the brain is taking itself apart and pruning neurons at both ages).

Try this on for size:

"During her nearly 2 decades teaching middle school, Jessica Lahey has noticed her students become so averse to emotional and intellectual risk, they're practically scared to be taught. Nervous about addressing this issue at her suspected source — the parents — she dove into research on topics like resilience, competence, and adaptation, so she could speak to these qualities with authority when telling parents their adorable little cherubs are totally unprepared for the real world

Why Failure Is So Important
"Failure includes mistakes, setbacks, frustration, and disappointment," Lahey says. "I want to destigmatize the word. Moments of frustration when you have to either give up or move forward are essential to learning. I can't teach kids who are absolutely unwilling to try something that they may fail at, or whose parents rush in and rescue them from failure." She says reflecting on the lessons of failure is equally important: "The ability to take constructive criticism or feedback is key to moving forward and becoming resilient."

What's the last place on Earth you would ever expect a mother to be thrown out of for breastfeeding her child?
