The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps Traditional Farm Corps have grown 🌱✨

Beginning in the Pueblo of Acoma, the program has been successful in restoring local food systems through agricultural traditions, training participants through farming mentorship, and bridging the youth and elders together to ensure these lifeways continue to live on for the next generations. Those seeds of inspiration have now transplanted to our offices in the Pueblos of Isleta and Zuni. The blossoming of the Farm Corps program has garnered interest from many who continue to share their story.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation recently traveled to New Mexico to visit our offices in the Pueblos of Acoma and Isleta and their respective Farm Corps programs. The day was filled with walkthroughs of farm corps operations. The foundation brought along a camera crew to capture our participants and staff perspectives about the growth of the Farm Corps program. Check out Video at the Foundation's YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/aw1Qab-Zf0I?si=pYZXOyr868tK3Za_ or Click the link in our Bio!

Thank you to Annie E. Casey Foundation and Early Light Media for highlighting the program and to our participants and staff who make this possible every day. We are so proud of your contributions and leadership.

“Growing up with this program has helped me really understand and realize how important this part of our culture is because it's not just a job. It's part of our life and it's part of our lifestyle that we need to keep going.” – Acoma Farm Corps Technician, Rebecca Ray

Tiana Cachini’s Story Map project is the capstone of partnerships featuring the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps (ALCC), Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center & Museum (CANM) Native Land, Native Lands, National Trails (NLNT), and the Partnership for the National Trails System.

Tiana’s accomplishments were highlighted at The Corps Network virtual summit where she was acknowledged as Corpsmember of the Year winner (A huge achievement and first in ALCC’s history!) Tiana will be traveling to Washington, DC to take part in The Corp’s Network’s Action Summit. She’ll be meeting with elected officials and federal partners to discuss her project while representing ALCC and the main partnerships who supported throughout her term of service.

As an Indigenous Mapping and Research Individual Placement, Tiana was tasked with creating a resource that will be used for current and future reference: Her main project is a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based resource highlighting the ancestral lands connected to the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and Indigenous perspectives that have historically been excluded from public land interpretation in the past.

” What drew me to this opportunity was that I would be able to ensure that our ancestral lands are accurately represented and respected. It was truly rewarding to work with CANM National Monument, Old Spanish National Historic Trail and NLNT to help share the history of those who are of this land.” - Tiana Cachini, Indigenous Mapping and Research Individual Placement

The hundreds of hours and research done for the Story Map spans across collaborating with her community to capture their voices and share the knowledge to pass down. These connections culminated in the creation of the “Lands & Trails: An A:Shiwi Perspective” website to host these resources. Here, you’ll also find the “Voices of the A:Shiwi”, A series of interviews conducted by Tiana, capturing the perspectives of the Zuni Cultural Resource Advisory Team and the youth of today that represent the Zuni Royalty Organization Two groups chronicling the oral history of these places of significance for the next generations.
