‼️ CALL TO ACTION ‼️
Albuquerque City residents & those in service to Abqs animals. YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED NOW. The City Council meeting which will determine this decision is being held TONIGHT - sign up to speak at 5pm.

If you cannot be there in person, PLEASE draft your emails of opposition to Albuquerque Animal Welfare budget cuts NOW.

Thank you to Animal Protection Voters for the following info:

Albuquerque’s animals urgently need your help!
The City of Albuquerque is finalizing their Fiscal Year 2027 budget, and it includes massive cuts in funding for the Animal Welfare Department. These budget cuts will eliminate 14 critical animal protection and law enforcement positions, and reduce spay/neuter and vaccination services for community cats by 50%. The result will set the City back years in its work to improve animal welfare, serve communities, and protect public health and safety.

Other cuts include a reduction in contract veterinarians, kennel keepers, animal handlers, and adoption counselors. A shortage in staffing will require more volunteers and force the department to focus on basic care to the extreme detriment of enrichment and behavioral work. This means reduced out-of-kennel times, fewer walks, and fewer chances at behaviorally-appropriate interactions, which are key factors in adoption. These actions will directly impact the emotional health and suffering of animals.

Mayor Tim Keller and City Councilors need to hear from you! Respectfully urge them to fully restore the budget for the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department:

Recognizing a very important & appreciated NMDOG partner in support on this very appropriate day = 4/20 🌱 The Team at Verdes Cannabis has been a supporter of for a solid decade, helping us fill in the gaps when we need them the most. Through their Employee Giving program, many employees of Verdes also choose to support the Mission of NMDOG. Verdes has also offered to sponsor a training package for Jace (the little kiddo we are currently working with from Tucumcari), which will help us set him up for success on his journey! Thank you!!

We first met Rachael & Eric (Founders of Verdes) when we were working the DogHead fire in the East mountains of Bernalillo County back in 2016. They were there to assist in any way needed & have proven themselves to be some of New Mexicos most dedicated advocates of Animal Welfare ever since. A few years later, they adopted their own NMDOG, BOBBY McGEE, who came to us from Las Vegas NM with his chain deeply embedded into his neck. BOBBY McGEE is now a senior fella who is still living his best life ❤ & for that alone, we couldnt be anymore grateful!

But there is so much more to these special humans, who are serving their industry with the highest of standards, knowledge & care. Verdes gives back in so many ways 🙏 I look up to Rachael as a human, an RN, a DogMom, a business leader & a friend. And today is her Birthday 🥳 (I guess to say she was born to be a leader in the Cannabis industry wouldnt be a stretch lol) Happy Birthday Rach, thank you for all that you do for our community & for the incredible, amazing & genuine person you are!!

....meet Jace ❤🐾
When we came across his intake photo on the Friends of the Tucumcari Animal Shelter page & heard they were having some trouble getting the chain off of his neck, we just knew he needed our help & expertise in setting previously chained dogs up for success! So we reached out to their stellar volunteer with our offer.

We have taken temporary custody of Jace for an extended decompression stay at NMDOG HQ. Here, he will learn not to fear the world around him, that words & touch from humans are kind & gentle. He will learn that every noise is not a threat, that nutritious meals & supplements are always provided, along with fresh water at all times. He will start socializing with other dogs once hes ready, receive an intake vetting exam at Blue Cross Animal Clinic including bloodwork, 4dx test, vaccines & a neuter + microchip appointment. Jace will visit our friends at Duke City Dog Spa for his first ever spa day, he will learn to walk on a leash + harness & he will gain experience riding in a car.

During his time with us at NMDOG HQ, Jace will understand that he is loved, adored & treasured, unconditionally. He will know his value & we will begin to learn about his untapped potential & the dog he was always meant to be. Jace will have playtime & enrichment, a soft, calm & warm place to sleep at night + a cool, climate controlled cozy place to hang out during the heat of the day. We will also begin housetraining. Jace will be given the time he needs to decompress appropriately from his horrific life at the end of his chain & will be allowed to progress at his own comfort level.

Small, rural shelters such as the Tucumcari Animal Shelter do not have the luxury of time that we are afforded here at NMDOG. They can oftentimes be short staffed, overcrowded, underfunded & as a result, behavior can decline instead of improve. The first chain free experience for these special dogs largely determines their chances of a good outcome....or not. We wanted to help ensure that Jace is given the best possible chance of a great outcome!

With 15+ years of working with & rehabilitating dogs from their chains, we knew NMDOG HQ was the place for Jace to be. Even if temporarily, what we have to offer could very well make all the difference in his world & for his future. We are so honored to be able to be Jace's soft place to land & we are grateful to Tucumcari Animal Control & their wonderful volunteer for trusting us in this process 🙏

Here is what we know about Jace so far....
He is under a year old. He has never been to a vet, never received medical care or vaccinations. He is emaicated & requires a strict refeeding protocol. He has pressure sores on his little bum. He was chained his whole life since he was a wee pup. At some point, Jace suffered multiple embedded chain wounds around his neck (told from the severe scarring hiding just under his fur). He was chained at a residence in the City of Tucumcari that caught fire a couple of weeks ago & was almost burned. His former "guardian" overdosed & is no longer living - this is what led to his seizure. So far we have noted no animal or human aggression, though Jace was initially growly & very wary of humans, especially humans trying to remove the chain from his neck (understandably). But he is making great progress every day & I am confident he is going to experience a full recovery. Jace arrived at NMDOG HQ on Friday 4/17/26.

Jace's adoption will go through the City of Tucumcari by way of his dedicated volunteer (also an NMDOG volunteer for over a decade), but with the support of NMDOG on the backside. All adoption interest should be sent to Cheryl - [email protected]
We may also consider transfer to an approved rescue for eventual placement. If you are a rescue interested in accepting Jace into your program - or if you are a shelter worker struggling with a chained dog intake - please email [email protected] 🥰

If you are interested in supporting Jace's journey, please consider a donation to NMDOG. Your donation will help us provide vetting, grooming, nutritious meals, supplements, gear, toys, training, enrichment, housing & 24 hour care while he is staying with us. He deserves the best & that is what we have promised him.... style ❤
