AMBA is more than just an organization that supports mountain bikers. We want to support outdoor enthusiasts of all kind and one of the ways we do that is by provide a restroom for all to enjoy.

Since January of this year AMBA has been the sponsor of this porta-potty at the top of Indian School/Embudo trailhead. Your donations made this possible. This is just one of the ways AMBA is giving back to our community and we have you to thank!

Today, when we entered the parking lot at Pine Flats, we saw that the US Forest Service has installed PAY stations for parking. They are currently covered, but you might expect to pay to park in the future.

You may notice that the crest road is open to the top of the mountain however, the trails are still closed at Ellis until further notice. We can’t wait to get back up there and enjoy those trails again but for now we ask everyone to continue to respect the closures until the work is done. We will keep you posted on any updates as we get them. 🚵

AMBA is a non-profit association whose mission is to create, enhance and preserve great trail experiences for mountain bikers in the greater Albuquerque area, and to create a bicycle friendly community through cycling awareness, safety, advocacy and promotion of bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation. AMBA seeks to preserve, protect, and promote mountain bike access and diverse riding opportunities on NM’s public and private lands through education, communication, and unified action.

AMBA is an IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) Chapter. Tapping into the roots of the former IMBA Chapter, FOO (Friends of the Outdoors), we are committed to continue advocating mountain biking in the greater Albuquerque area.

AMBA builds community as well as trails. Momentum is building, and people just like you are volunteering their time. AMBA is not just about one agenda item. Our members have various personal reasons for coming together such as giving back to the sport, trail building, organizing races, and organizing community rides, just to name a few.

Whatever your passion, AMBA has a place for you! We are a collaborative group who utilize our individual passion for the sport in an effort to move forward with establishing a terrific mountain bike riding community in Albuquerque. Be careful out there. While riding on the backside of the Sandia‘s this weekend a few riders found that someone removed some small features on Challenge as well as hammered in a piece of rebar in the middle of the trail. This could be very dangerous, considering the speeds people ride down that trail and could cause serious injury. The rebar that was found has been removed, but there may be more out there, so please be careful. The map shows where the rebar was so beware in that area. If you see suspicious behavior or have any insight on who might have done this, please reach out to the forest service. We have reported this incident.

This is my favorite trail in New Mexico with lots of fun riding and amazing scenery. Plan to catch the free Santa Fe bus 255 at 9:20AM at the Fort Marcy Park Bus stop. There are ~12 bike spots on the bike rack, and sundays aren’t usually busy but there is always a risk of it being full. If there isn’t enough room on the bus, we’ll try to self shuttle. If that’s not possible, plan to go on other local trails. If all goes well, we’ll get on the bus, and get off at Norski Trailhead, and ride down ~3500’ over 9 miles. The trail goes through pine trees, with cliff edges at the top, and as it comes down, it feels like you are biking through a Rainforest under tree canopy as you cross a stream many times over narrow ledges. Once we are at the end of the trail, there is some pavement riding back to the bus stop. If you are not comfortable riding on pavement, you maybe able to lock your bike to a post and uber to the bus stop to pick up your car.

Props to SMT. It's great to see responsible public support for class 1 EMTBs. Hopefully, we can get support like this from the City of Albuquerque Open Space, MRGCD, and Bernalillo County.

E-bikes are a hot topic, so we want to be clear about where SMT stands on this rapidly evolving technology.

Currently, e-bikes are prohibited on almost all trails SMT stewards (Rainbow and Monarch Crest are the exceptions). Ultimately, land managers (U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, City of Salida) make the decisions about what uses are permitted on trails, and must go through the legally prescribed process to set those rules.

SMT supports expanding opportunities for Class 1, pedal-assist e-bikes on the trails we steward, and we are committed to working with land managers and our community to determine the right approach for our trails.

We believe thoughtfully managed e-bike use makes our trails more inclusive for riders of all ages and abilities—including older adults, people with physical limitations, families, and those recovering from injury—while delivering significant health benefits, boosting local tourism and supporting Chaffee County’s economy.

SMT supports Class 1 e-bikes only (no throttle, motor stops assisting at 20 mph) with the expectation that all riders practice excellent trail etiquette: yielding to hikers/runners and horses, staying on designated trails and riding responsibly. By welcoming more e-bike riders, we ensure Salida’s trails remain vibrant, accessible and sustainable for everyone who loves recreating outdoors.

The best available research shows Class 1 e-bikes have no significant difference in soil erosion or trail impact compared to traditional mountain bikes—trail sustainability depends far more on design, maintenance, and rider behavior than bike type. Our sustainably built trails are designed to handle this growing use.

In 2022, SMT launched a survey to gauge public opinion about ebikes on our trails. In it, 80% of respondents said ebikes should be allowed on at least some trails we manage, including 70% who said they should be allowed on all SMT trails. Since then, e-bikes have only become more prevalent.
