Ban the feeding and the cats don't leave. They just get warier, hungrier, and harder to help. Call that policy if you like. It's cruelty that won a vote.
Now picture the opposite. Caretakers get a green light instead of a citation. Cats are fixed, fed on schedule, and watched over by someone who knows each face. The yowling fights fade. The wandering slows. Fewer kittens come into the world on cold concrete. Wherever towns have actually tried this, the same story plays out.
The people setting down the bowls were never the problem. The problem is the people who wrote the rule, and a bad rule won't repeal itself. Somebody has to make it uncomfortable to keep.
What we want is simple: cats who live long, healthy lives because food and medical care never run out. A spay or neuter is healthcare. A meal is healthcare too, not charity. A cat who starts life secure has a lot less to suffer later.
Staying quiet is not neutral. Every time a caretaker stands alone against a bad ordinance, the ordinance wins by default. So show up, and let your neighbors see these cats as animals worth protecting instead of pests worth chasing off.
Here's what showing up looks like: petitions with real names, a crowded council chamber, facts on the table instead of hunches, and elected officials who understand their names are attached to the vote. Make enough noise and the ban starts costing more than it's worth.
