Congratulations to Falcon filmmaker Ian Roach for being selected as one of the top ten artists in the Young Masters Awards National Art Contest for his film, "Rad Dude's Guide to Love and Manhood"!

"I'm honored to be a recipient of this award," Roach shared. "I'd like to thank my friends for their help in the process of making movies and everyone who has supported me by watching them."

Roach's film was one of 10 pieces selected from 600 submissions created by students in grades 1-12 from across the United States. It features original music written by Roach and performances by fellow Albany High classmates Sophie Handyside, Leo Stimac and Anna Ustin, as well as Class of 2025 alum William O'Neill.

Categories for the competition included drawing, painting, mixed media, cartoon & comic art, digital art & illustration, photography, film & animation and architecture & sculpture.

A big shoutout to guiding art teacher, Theresa Story, who encouraged Roach to submit his film to the Young Masters Awards!

Eight talented Albany High art students―Vander Khan, Olive Carey, Julia Rosi, Eliza Schlesinger, Lucy Rathke-Cook, Sienna Stewart, Hailey Farrell and Alex Steuer―engaged their ingenuity, teamwork and creativity at the 44th Olympics of the Visual Arts (OVA) on April 30 in Saratoga Springs!

This is the first time a group of student-artists from Albany High have participated in OVA, and it was thrilling for our trailblazing artists to represent our school community with pride.

“Really being able to work together, collaborate, work out all the nuts and bolts for how it actually works for the competition was really cool,” shared senior Sienna Stewart. “I think we are all really proud of our products.”

For the competition, our Falcons embraced the theme of “natural connections” by crafting two incredible pieces: a table setting with an ocean theme for the design category and a large-scale illustration based on the children’s book “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen for the illustration category.

For the on-demand challenge, the theme was “celebration of life” and our Falcons loved getting down to the cellular level, unleashing an amazing biology-themed creation!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to guiding teacher Kristine Monahan, as well as Albany Fund for Education and Stewart’s Shops for providing funding to help make this enriching experience possible for our Falcon artists!

Congratulations to this year's Tulip Queen, Syaira Liverpool, who is both an Albany High alum and a first-year faculty member at Albany High! 🌷

Liverpool graduated from Albany High in 2021 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Howard University with a minor in community development. Upon returning home to Albany, she was thrilled to join her alma mater as a teaching assistant in the special education department.

Beyond the classroom, she serves as a mentor for students involved in My Sister's Keeper, assists with the unified basketball team and also helps guide our students who organize and stock the Falcon Market.

Liverpool will begin her graduate studies in school counseling this fall at Russell Sage College in Albany with the goal of becoming a college and career readiness counselor. Her positive experiences at Albany High as a student inspired her to dedicate her life to guiding young people as they navigate important decisions related to their post-secondary education.

As the 2026 Tulip Queen, Liverpool looks forward to promoting literacy for children and families here in Albany and volunteering her time to bring stronger connections within our community.

We know that she will carry out her service with the same excellence and enthusiasm she brings to our hallways each day at Albany High!
