Pickling cucumbers and other vegetables was a significant undertaking at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School Garden Club on Tuesday. It's the season for such a thing. But getting kids outside and getting their hands dirty was really the main order of business, as it generally is. And of course, it's time to get next summer's garlic crop started. And we're always starting or tasting a few pea shoots and turning compost.

We build teaching and learning around doing and touching and tasting and experiencing -- because we know it makes a difference!

The Vegetable Project team is pretty much overwhelmed when 25 Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School students show up to its weekly after-school Garden Club, as happened on the last Tuesday of September, just like the Tuesday before that. Maybe if getting everyone to follow rules were a higher priority than making sure that everyone's participation is a hands-on experience, we would keep things more orderly.

But our priority is building teaching and learning around doing and touching and tasting and experiencing and doing that for everyone who shows up. So we make the best of the situation by cooking up as much varied activity as we can each week.

Pictured here are harvesting collard greens, measuring pH and macronutrients in soil where blueberries are growing, clearing a garden bed where garlic will be planted and sautéing a melange of things growing in the garden. And that is just a portion of everything we had going on!

The folks who show Albany students where to find the freshest salsa ingredients, how to prepare the tasty treat and bring a bag of tortilla chips to enjoy it with, who have created outdoor experiential learning opportunities for 100 students since the new school year started, who create hands-on teaching and learning around native plants and invasive plants again and again and who talk endlessly about the power of exposure to nature, would be grateful for your help in keeping all this going.
