Medical ethics have an impact not only on patients, but also on their healthcare providers. This article examines discrimination within healthcare workplaces and how it affects both healthcare workers’ well-being and the quality of patient care.

It introduces the concept of affective injustice, and raises questions about the duty to care, especially when healthcare providers face discriminatory patients and must balance professional obligations with their own dignity and mental health.

This article examines the ethical question of how scarce healthcare resources should be distributed fairly across society.

It shows that risk-based healthcare systems may unfairly burden people whose health risks are cheaper to identify, and connects to debates about personal responsibility in healthcare, especially whether people should pay more for risks they are seen as responsible for.

The article is relevant to health policy ethics because it challenges insurance and healthcare financing systems that claim to be fair while applying risk assessment unevenly.

Proponents of AI-generated synthetic data argue that it can fill data gaps in healthcare, improve algorithmic fairness, and mitigate bias without requiring costly data collection or raising privacy concerns. But this article examines whether it may worsen, rather than solve, inequities affecting underserved populations.

The author raises core ethical concerns about bias, justice, informed consent, autonomy, and the risks of using opaque technologies in medical decision-making. The article argues that technical fixes like synthetic data should not replace structural reforms aimed at achieving genuine inclusion and fairness in medical research.

AMBI is thrilled to welcome Dr. Nedah Nemati as Assistant Professor of Bioethics starting in August 2026. Dr. Nemati earned her MSc in Biological Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Nemati’s research examines how tools used in evolutionary and computational neuroscience shape our understanding of human and nonhuman animal behavior. Her current NSF-supported project centers on the impacts of AI on behavioral ontology in neuroscience and builds on a phenomenological framework of “lived experience.”

The Alden March Bioethics Institute was established in 1993 as the Center for Medical Ethics Education and Research. Under the direction of John Balint, M.D., over the next decade, medical school classes in ethics, clinical consultation and several research programs emerged. Today, we offer graduating medical students a distinction in bioethics, have expanded our clinical consultations, offer ongoing resources to graduate resident education, and continue with research in the field of bioethics.
