Because Indianapolis is home to some of the most innovative healthcare facilities, leaders, and techniques in the world, Fair Haven has the incredible opportunity to provide compassionate housing to patients who are traveling far from home for critical medical care that can only happen here in the Circle City.
One of those cutting-edge treatments that has revolutionized testicular cancer care is called Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection, or RPLND. RPLND surgery was pioneered at Indiana University in the 1960s. The IU Health urology team, in partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine, is the world’s leading institution in pioneering the surgical technique. This nerve-sparing procedure has many real advantages for a male patient looking to undergo treatment for testicular cancer, including potentially avoiding chemotherapy, having a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery, and enduring less complications from surgery.
In just the past 12 months, Fair Haven has been able to house patients and their families from Texas, Kentucky, New Jersey, Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana who traveled to Indianapolis for this life-saving testicular cancer surgery. Over the years we've also served patients from Canada, Iceland, India, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela who traveled to Indianapolis for testicular cancer surgery.
We are thankful to the doctors and amazing medical teams at IU Health, including Dr. Einhorn, Dr. Cary, and Dr. Masterson, who are leading the way in treating this disease and caring for patients in a comprehensive way!
