The Russell County Farmer’s Federation received the Farm City Proclamation from Russell County Commission. The Women’s Leadership Committee presented a commodity basket featuring commodities grown and produced in Alabama to the commission. We greatly appreciate the Commission and the ongoing efforts to support agriculture in Russell County and the state.

Harvest relief for America’s farmers.

Today, President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Rollins announced the Harvest Fuel Relief Program — making $8 BILLION available for one-time payments to farmers facing higher costs and market disruptions.

Here’s what that means:

➡️ Payments to help cover a portion of estimated losses for the 2026 crop year.

➡️ Payment amounts based on planted acres, production costs, crop yields, and prices.

➡️ Row crop payment rates announced in November, with details for other eligible commodities to follow.

➡️ Application will be available online using a http://Login.gov account that is connected to USDA.

Show us the money! Today, the Wiregrass RC&D Council along with the distinguished elected officials presented the 2026 grant awards. Numerous grants were presented from both the educational and general fund categories. Each grant recipient gave us the end of the year status report and how the money that they received has affected them and the communities that they served. Also in attendance was Senator Barry Beasley, Representative Barry Forte, Russell County Commission Chair, Chance Corbett,  Wiregrass Executive Director, Ronnie Davis and Communications Director Abby Richardson. Congratulations to each of our 2026 Wiregrass RC&D grant awardees!

The WLC attended the ALFA State Heritage Cooking contest in Montgomery on Thursday. We had 28 county winners deliver the goods with a wide variety of different chicken salad. Can you imagine being a judge with that many choices? After a wonderful talk with Wild Flour Cafe and Bakery, we got to sample some of their baked goods. They were delicious. Prizes were awarded to top 3 winners in the contest and many great door prizes were given. Then we got to sample the many choices of delicious chicken salads!

It has been a busy week for the Russell County Women’s Leadership Committee! Wednesday we attended the ForestHER Longleaf workshop at Historical Ft Mitchell. We learned about the history of Longleaf pines, their impact on the South, how their biodiversity affects over 300 species of animals including the endangered gopher turtle. We learned about different species of pine trees, growth patterns and a lot of why and why nots! After a great lunch catered by Penny Walters, we learned out to make pine straw baskets. Now that was an adventure.
