We had a wonderful evening of fishing on Turkeyfoot lake to finish up the spring Intro to Fly Fishing session for the VA Whole Health program.

A big thanks to the VA for partnering with Project Healing Waters to put on these classes. Its always nice to get new people fly fishing and a big thanks to the volunteers from the Akron PHW program that helped introduce the newbies to the fly fishing gateway drug,..... bluegills!

The weather didn't quite cooperate last Tuesday night for the Casting class but we still got some indoor casting work done and tied up some spinners.

This Tuesday evening will be our last spring session for the VA Whole Health program's Intro to Fly Fishing class. We'll be putting all the lessons together to catch some fish on the fly at the Portage Lakes State Park beach.

Fish on!

05/05/2026

Tonight's class for VA's intro to fly fishing will be inside unless we get a break in the clouds.

We'll be tying flies again as a group but taking our vets away from the tying vise for some 1 on 1 casting instruction throughout the evening.

One more week until we get out on the water to catch some fish!

Our own Forrest Norman (USMC) just returned from Oak Heart where he served as trip lead for a great group of vets. Trip lead is a demanding job but it looks like he found some time to get some fishing done too!

Thanks to the Clear Fork TU chapter for hosting a talk by Dustin Coffey, Orvis guide of the year in 2024. What a great presentation! He really has a way of making fly fishing simple. We learned some new tricks that should make us better teachers for our vets.

We added to the eggs boxes Tuesday night but looking forward to getting outside for some casting as the weather warms. I hope you’re all getting on the water for steelhead or some of the stocked trout.

We’re also looking forward to hosting an Intro to Fly Fishing course for the Akron VA’s Whole Health program starting in mid April.

Tight lines everyone

There were quite a few nice dry four flies tied tonight. Forrest took through the finer points of using dubbing, then were tried out new skills on size 14 blue wing olives. I was very impressed with the flies we turned out tonight!

We hope to see you at one of the many upcoming fly tying events.

Welcome to a New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable New Year's eve (despite the Buckeye game).

As you prepare for 2026, I hope that you plan a year full of fly fishing fun with your PHW family. Try to set some goals for yourself. Catch a fish with one of your flies. Catch several species of fish on the fly. Learn to double haul or learn a spey cast. Teach a new fly tyer how to whip finish. Catch a mythical steelhead on the fly!!

Whatever your goals are, setting them and working toward them will make the new year more enjoyable. I look forward to spending 2026 with you and helping you achieve your goals.

Tight lines,
Sean
