5 people came to Crackerneck at the crack of dawn today to bird the property for our Wings and Things outting. It was cloudy and humid but we still managed 49 species of birds with great looks at Great-crested Flycatchers, Summer Tanager, Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, both buntings, Blue Grosbeak, Prothonotary Warbler and more. We even had a few dragonflies and a number of butterflies including multiple Pipevine Swallowtails, Texan Crescents, Little Wood Satyr and Twin-spotted Skipper as well as some common species.

In addition we had several flowers and some really cool fungi. It was a fun trip!

Here are the rest of the field trips for this year.

July 25-Storks and Kites. Meet at the Kathwood Ponds at Silver Bluff at 8am. We will scan the lowered ponds for shorebirds and waders. Sept 9-Crackerneck WMA. Meet at the gate on Brown Rd in Jackson, SC at 8am. This is a Wings and Things naturalist trip and we will be looking at everything. We should be done by 1 or 2 pm.

Oct 17-Lover’s Lane-meet at Popeye’s at Gordon Hwy snd Walton Way at 8am. We will drive to Lover’s Lane looking for fall migrants.

Nov 14-Tanager Trail. Meet at the Kathwood Ponds at 8am. We will walk the Tanager Trail starting at the new Kathwood Spur looking for winter arrivals.

Dec 5-Phinizy Swamp NP-meet in the parking lot at 8am and we will walk around the cells looking for winter residents.

ARCI and Orleans Audubon Society are tracking Swallow-tailed Kites as they return to their breeding grounds. See the latest blog to find out where the aerial research team is today: https://www.arcinst.org/wp/wp-admin/post.php?post=18669&action=edit

Swallow-tailed Kites continue to return to the Southeast, but some are already nesting. Help us gain knowledge on nest success by joining the "Eyes on Kites" program to monitor nest behavior: https://www.arcinst.org/eyes-on-kites/

Reminder to join us April 10 at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse for a special screening of "Tracking Kites" produced by Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management: https://www.facebook.com/reel/974047898384942
