π³οΈβπNational Coming Out Day | October 11th π³οΈββ§οΈ
Today, October 11th, all of us at Lenawee Pride are celebrating National Coming Out Day. We honor the resilience, courage and authenticity of LGBTQ+ people everywhere. Recognizing the history of activism that made this day possible is also important to us.
National Coming Out Day was first observed on October 11th, 1988. This day was organized by LGBTQ+ activists Robert Eichberg and Jean OβLeary. This date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights. This was a historic demonstration that brought hundreds of thousands of people together to demand equality. National Coming Out Day was founded on an extremely powerful idea: that visibility matters. Sharing our stories and living authentically as ourselves, we can challenge prejudice, build understanding, and remind the whole world that LGBTQ+ people are important parts of every community.
Coming out, however is a deeply personal journey for each individual. For some, it may be a moment of joy, self-discovery and freedom. For others, It may be a moment of uncertainty, and fear. It may leave them with concerns for acceptance and safety. Some people choose to be out to the world, some only share their truth with a trusted group of people, and others may not feel yet safe to come out.
There is no right way to come out, and no one owes the world their story.
Today, we celebrate those who have embraced their authentic and true selves, we honor those who are still finding their way. We also remember the countless generations of LGBTQ+ people who fought for the visibility, rights, and acceptance that we are continuing to work toward today.
To our LGBTQ+ community here in Lenawee County and beyond: you belong here. You deserve safety, love, and the undeniable freedom to be yourself. Not just today, but every day.
May you let National Coming Out Day be a powerful reminder that visibility matters, representation matters, and acceptance can change and save lives. We all have a role in creating communities where everyone feels safe enough to live in their authentic selves.
Coming out is personal. Acceptance is powerful. Pride is for all of us.
Happy National Coming Out Day from Lenawee Pride.
