April is National Native Plant Month, so join us in sharing Native Plant Facts to spread awareness!

This week, let’s take a look at oak trees (Quercus), and see what our local trees are doing for our local wildlife.

🌳 Oak trees (Quercus) support extraordinary diversity of life—hosting around 500 species of caterpillars.

But why is this important?

This abundance matters because caterpillars are a crucial food source for birds, especially during breeding season when chicks need food to grow. (Some species of songbirds need 1,000+ caterpillars per brood). By sustaining so many caterpillars, oak trees support bird populations.

⭐️ The math is simple: Not enough oak trees = Not enough caterpillars = Not enough birds.

Beyond birds, caterpillars also feed other wildlife like small mammals and beneficial insects, creating a rich, interconnected food web. When spared as food, caterpillars grow into important pollinators. A single oak tree acts as a foundation for biodiversity, helping maintain balance and resilience across the entire ecosystem.

Stay tuned for the rest of our Oak Series coming out this week!

Repost this so your friends can learn, too.
