The DNA results are in! 🥳

Meatball is 100% bulldog in some shape or form!

69.2% American Bully
This is the Americanized version of a “bulldog” which isn’t a formally recognized AKC breed but has become a popular push in backyard breeding which has resulted in some very poor characteristics. You may see ads for pocket bully’s and they would fall in this category.

21.8% Bulldog aka English Bulldog which is your short traditional Bulldog with the round head

9% French Bulldog which explains his wild sound effects! 🤪

It is so fun to find out the breeds of our rescues because it can help unravel some of the behavioral issues and validate what we thought.

No matter, he’s 100% Meatball! ☺️

Turtle time at the sanctuary!
We are the keepers of several tortoises and turtles who have special needs and they are all well over 10 years old now.

We aren’t just a dog rescue/refuge but take in and care for many exotics and small mammals as well.

Griffey!

And the results are in! We pulled Griffey from BARCS Animal Shelter last fall as she was a third time stray brought into the shelter. BARCS had in their records that her owner stated she was a Minpin/Sh*tzu and sure enough! She must have been the result of an intentional “backyard” breeding as that is what her Embark dna testing revealed. Sad she was a stray multiple times and was never redeemed but we are grateful to have her. She had signs of abuse so now she’s living her best life. Must have been destiny as we have been keepers of MinPins since the early 90s and they are our heart breed. Griffey’s tenacity and energy are true to the Minpin profile so it’s a match made in heaven. 😊❤️🐕

W**d - little warrior rabbit man 🐇

Warning: these pictures will be considered gorey to most!

Not all stories have happy endings here at the mission. W**d, an older lion head rabbit, has been battling a relentless series of facial abscesses. He underwent his first big surgery on December 1st and has since had 2 additional surgeries. After months of many antibiotics and biweekly injections, many vet visits, and two additional major surgeries, we have decided to stop further treatment. Our vet is one of the most sought after exotic vets in the region and he has never seen anything as invasive as this in his 30 years in practice. W**d has micro abscesses throughout his muscle tissue that has spanned from above/behind the eye around his face and into the jaw and neck. We are only 2 weeks post op from surgery #3 and the abscesses are already forming again despite aggressive drug treatment. After almost 5 months of surgeries and drug treatments, W**d has had enough. This infection is relentless and all treatments have just been temporary.😞

We always trust our animals to lead the way and tell us how to navigate their care and we have no doubt W**d wants to live his last days eating carrots and not having more surgeries and meds and injections.

We will keep W**d comfortable and will not let him suffer. He still hops around and stomps his feet and we hope his quality of life will be good for whatever time he has left.

We gave it our best shot and sometimes even the best vets and best intentions are not enough.

Send some good vibes to our little warrior rabbit W**d! ❤️

These beauties joined the rescue today from BARCS Animal Shelter. Gerbils are curious and entertaining creatures! Grateful to be able to bring these two into the sanctuary.

It’s rescue day!

Today we took in two gerbils from BARCS Animal Shelter which were confiscated in an animal control violation. We have years of experience with gerbils so we were able to quickly aid these guys and get awesome enclosures set up at the sanctuary. One has significant scarring and a lost tail so these guys came from a tough past but can live their lives out with lots of great care, peace and happiness. 😊❤️

Never enough Mila!

Here she is enjoying the afternoon at the refuge. We are so grateful that she is enjoying her days. Quite a comeback story but every day is a gift and nothing is taken for granted ever! ❤️

We have tweaked Mila’s diet yet again to try to compensate for her neurological conditions with her tongue. Back to dry kibble which she is able to grab and swallow(at least for now). This is our fifth different dietary trial in the past two months. She’s enjoying Fromm Family Foods small dog kibble and we are hoping this works for her! ❤️

Of course they can’t figure Meatball out! He’s part gargoyle! So funny to get this today. We were joking that he’d be a mystery. 🐶🤷🏻‍♀️

Another great rescue story today! We were able to pull two eastern box turtles from
BARCS Animal Shelter which were taken in an animal control violation in Baltimore. It’s illegal to house more than one native Eastern Box turtle in Maryland.

Our buddy Val has a permit to house this species and was able to take them for her educational programs with Wildlife Adventures.

Win win for these turtles. They landed in an excellent home and will get to educate the public and have a job. We are thankful for all our alliances and friends who make this kind of rescue possible! 😊❤️🐢🐢

Great rescue weekend here at the mission!
