Guppy Update! ❤️🩹
The ultrasound results came back early this morning showing several abnormalities in Guppy’s abdomen. As suspected, she was never spayed and had big uterine masses as well as a lesion by the abdominal wall. The radiologist suggested a CT scan and then possible referral to a special surgeon but, after talking extensively with our vet who is an amazing vet and surgeon with tremendous knowledge, we decided to be brave and just have her go in and do an exploratory surgery without knowing what she’d find.
She already had a full schedule, including an afternoon appointment with refuge resident Mila (who was diagnosed with pneumonia today), but as soon as they got chest X-rays on Mila, she jumped into emergency surgery on Guppy. We awaited the update knowing we very well could be authorizing euthanasia while she was on the operating table so we all held our breath and sent positive energy out to the universe. Twenty minutes into the surgery a tech came out to say she was going to proceed with a spay to remove all the tumors and she also found a nodule on the pancreas that could very well be the cause of the blood sugar crashes. Surgery took about an hour and Guppy is being released just two hours later. 😮
Last night she was released to our care with blood sugar checks and an IV catheter to flush every few hours but we got her through the night. It’s been a stressful few days to say the least as we juggle several very ill dogs right now at the refuge. Guppy’s blood sugar was so low yesterday morning, she should have been in a coma or even have died. 😰 But, like several of our resilient strong girls here, she defied all odds and is coming home tonight.
We will post more about her diagnosis and recovery as we get pathology results. One hour at a time and all time is a gift . We take nothing for granted. Thanks to all who sent positive energy out in the world for this little 4.5 pound fighter. ❤️
