This week in the classroom, self-control!

Self-control is not something we can practice in our own strength, but as a fruit of the Gospel of Jesus. Before discussing self-control, we heard about how Jesus was tempted by Satan and endured through God's Word. Jesus did what we could not: lived a perfect life on our behalf! Trusting in His perfect life, death, and resurrection for us, we can lean on Him and continue to grow more into living as He did.

This week in the classroom: wholeheartedness!

Jesus, who is truly God and truly man, is wholeheartedly devoted to the will of His Father. We can see this from the time He was a boy and was growing in wisdom and stature, astounding even the teachers with whom He was speaking in the temple, to the time He went willingly to the cross.

When we trust in Jesus to reconcile us to God, we get a new heart with a new desire to be wholeheartedly devoted to Him.

This week, we're discussing obedience. But before we can talk about obedience, we have to talk about Adam and Eve's, and our own, disobedience.

Head: God put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and told them how to have perfect relationship with Him. He gave them many good things; food, fulfilling work, each other. But Adam and Eve disobeyed God's one law and ate of the tree that He told them not to eat from. Sin is breaking God's law.

Heart: After Adam's sin, we are all born sinners, and we often desire to break God's law. We do not naturally have that right relationship with God that Adam and Eve first enjoyed. But after Adam and Eve's sin, God promised them that Jesus would come as the offspring of the woman to save them, and us, from our disobedience.

Hand: When we trust in Jesus and His death on the cross to set us free from our sin, He also causes us to want to live for God's glory. With a new heart and mind given to us by Jesus, we can obey God out of thankfulness that He saved us.

We are excited to be back in the classroom this week! For our first lesson, we learned some big truths:

Head: God created the world and everything in it for His glory. He created people in His image, calling them to have a relationship with Him.

Heart: Jesus is the Creator and full picture of the glory of God. People need Jesus in order to have the relationship with God that He calls us to. People also have inherent dignity and worth because they are made in God's image.

Hand: We respond in gratitude to God for making a way for us to have proper relationship with and glorify Him through Jesus. We respect people as God's image bearers.
