Our DVAM theme is Strong Hearts; Safe Communities and we will be having a conversation between our COO Rachel Carr-Shunk and special guest Judge Pope.

Melissa L. Pope serves as Chief Judge of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Court and Chief Justice of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Tribal Court of Appeals.
A longtime advocate in the anti-violence movement, she has dedicated her career to advancing survivor safety, accountability, culturally honoring practices, and access to justice for Indigenous communities.
Judge Pope also teaches American Indian Law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and has been appointed to multiple boards and forums including the Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board (MDSVPTB), the Michigan Indian Judicial Association, and the Michigan Tribal State Federal Judicial Forum.

We are exhausted. Our feet hurt. Our brains are approximately 3% functional. And we’re pretty sure we’ll be finding conference supplies in random places for the next six months. 😂

But what a week.

To every speaker who shared their knowledge, every sponsor who made this possible, and every attendee who showed up ready to learn, connect, and have conversations that matter — thank you.

There’s something pretty incredible about watching months of planning turn into a room full of people committed to making a difference in their communities.

For now, this committee is officially signing off for the weekend. 😂💜

👋 Early Check-In: Stop by the Dakota Event Center tonight from 4–6 PM to check in and pick up your conference materials early.

💜 Pack your purple! We’re wearing purple on Thursday, September 17 to show support for survivors and stand together against domestic violence.
