💙⚾️ We are grateful to the Center for Jewish Philanthropy of Greater Phoenix for once again bringing our community together for this incredible annual event. It was a beautiful day to celebrate Jewish pride, honor our survivors, and come together as a community.

We were especially proud to see Holocaust survivor Sam Wagman throw the ceremonial first pitch, representing the strength, resilience, and spirit of our community.

It was wonderful seeing so many members of our PHA family throughout the day!

⚾️At 91, Holocaust survivor and longtime Phoenix resident Sam Wagman threw the ceremonial first pitch at today’s Jewish Community Day!

We are honored to celebrate Sam and his incredible resilience! 🇺🇸⚾️

Sam Wagman is a 91-year-old Holocaust survivor. He survived over a year of imprisonment in the Wengrow Ghetto before being deported to the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. After a harrowing escape, Sam and his mother hid for the next two years in the woods until they were liberated by Soviet troops at the end of the war.

Despite being born into an extended family of 50 people, he and his mother were the only family members to escape death during the war and the only known survivors of the Wengrow Ghetto. Sam immigrated to the U.S. in 1950 and graduated high school in New Jersey before serving in the United States Air Force.

He moved to Phoenix in 1970 where he spent his mornings hiking Camelback three times a day, hiking the mountain over 34,000 times. We are honored to have Sam throw the ceremonial first pitch as part of Jewish Community Day.

If you haven't had the opportunity to read the recent article in The Jewish News honoring the life of Holocaust survivor Henry Jacobowitz, we encourage you to do so.

Phoenix Holocaust Association was honored to have Henry as a valued member of our organization and is grateful for the impact he made by sharing his story with our community.

His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Henry Jacobowitz, a lawyer, volunteer, military veteran and Holocaust survivor, passed away on June 7 at 97 years old, survived by his daughter, Susan, and three granddaughters.
