On September 24, 2026, the Faith for Family Health initiative (3FHi), with support from The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, conducted a high-impact retooling and refresher training for Health Champions in Kiryandongo District.
In this video, discover how trusted faith and cultural leaders are stepping up to tackle critical public health challenges—from maternal health and teenage pregnancy to tuberculosis (TB) and healthcare misinformation.
📌 Key Highlights & Community Challenges Addressed:
Safer Maternal Health: Addressing the reliance on Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) by advocating for skilled facility deliveries, antenatal care, and birth preparedness.
Tackling Teenage Pregnancy: Expanding age-appropriate SRH education, adolescent-friendly services, and community stakeholder involvement.
Countering Health Misinformation: Engaging legitimate faith leaders to address misleading practices and promote evidence-informed medical care.
Tuberculosis (TB) Awareness: Reducing stigma, promoting early symptom detection, testing, and treatment adherence.

LC5 Chairperson, Kiryandongo District: Applauded 3FHi for creating a vital entry point to unite and engage religious leaders in community health initiatives.

On 18th, September 2026, Faith For Family Health initiative -3FHi with support from The David and Lucille Packard Foundation in Gomba during the retooling and refresher training, the Health Champions highlighted several priority challenges affecting families and communities in Gomba District.

🔹 Deliveries with traditional birth attendants:Women continue to seek delivery services from traditional or local birth attendants instead of health facilities, increasing the risk of complications that require skilled medical care this increased maternal mortality rate.The Health Champions emphasized the need to strengthen community awareness on the importance of antenatal care, birth preparedness, and delivery under the care of skilled health attendant

🔹 Teenage pregnancies: Teenage pregnancy remains a significant concern, with communities identifying the need for stronger prevention, accurate SRH information, improved access to adolescent-friendly services, and greater involvement of parents, faith leaders, cultural leaders, and other community stakeholders. There is also a need to support adolescents who become pregnant to access appropriate health and social services.

🔹 Misleading or unregulated religious practices: Participants also raised concerns about individuals and groups presenting themselves as religious leaders or operating religious practices that may promote misinformation or discourage community members from seeking appropriate health services. The Health Champions identified the importance of engaging legitimate and trusted faith leaders to counter misinformation, promote evidence-informed health practices, and encourage timely referral to health facilities.

These challenges reinforce the importance of strengthening the role of trusted faith and cultural leaders in health promotion. Through the Inter-Faith Alliance for Health, leaders can work collectively with health authorities and communities to promote accurate information, encourage appropriate health-seeking behaviour, strengthen referrals, and address harmful practices while respecting the cultural and religious context of the communities they serve.

Strengthening Community Action for Better Maternal Health
The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) emphasized the importance of working with religious leaders to advance health information and address the high rates of teenage pregnancy in our communities.
“With this approach of working with religious leaders, we will be able to advance health information and address the high rates of teenage pregnancies in our communities. We must also work together to prevent the loss of unborn babies and improve maternal health outcomes.”
The CAO further called for stronger collaboration between district leadership, health workers, Faith For Family Health Initiative-3FHi, and religious leaders to ensure communities receive the information, services, and support they need.
“No woman should lose her child simply because she could not access essential maternal health services.”
Together, we can strengthen community action, improve access to essential maternal health services, prevent teenage pregnancies, and contribute to better maternal and newborn health outcomes.

“As a district, we strongly welcome the approach 3FHi is using to work with religious leaders. They have a wide reach and numbers, and we believe they are a great source for advancing accurate health information to their followers and communities.
Come 1st & 2nd October, we will work with these religious leaders to roll out information on the mass immunization of children below five years. Their support will be critical in mobilizing communities, creating awareness, and encouraging parents & caregivers to have their children vaccinated.”

Building stronger community health champions!
Today, Faith For Family Health Initiative (3FHi), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Butambala District Health Leadership, with funding from The David and Lucille Packard Foundation, retooled 3FHi-trained Interfaith Religious and Cultural Leaders Health Champions in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH).
The retooling also covered key Ministry of Health priorities, including malaria and sickle cell, strengthening the capacity of health champions to support health awareness and community action.
Together, we continue to strengthen community-led approaches to better health.

Today Faith For Family Health Initiative-3FHi led by Bishop Amos magezi NorthWest Ankole Diocese who is also the Chairperson of 3FHi Board Programme Implementation and policy implementation committee convened a refresher training/retooling of the Inter-faith religious leaders with Support from The David and Lucille Packard Foundation on sexual reproductive health, malaria amd sickle cell in Ibanda district and the event was graced by the CSO, RDC, DHO representative, LCC and other key stakeholders.
