Winnie Byanyima has visited her husband, four-time presidential candidate Kizza Besigye, in prison to mark his 70th birthday on April 22, 2026.

Through Byanyima, Dr Besigye conveyed messages of gratitude to Ugandans for sustaining faith in the struggle for liberation and acknowledged their resilience. He also appreciated the well wishes and support extended to him during his detention, noting that despite being held since November 2024, his spirit remains high.

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee is urging the Trump Administration and the State Department to review U.S. security assistance and take action against individuals in Uganda accused of undermining democratic principles.

Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Cory Booker say accountability is needed following Uganda’s elections.

The UN human rights office has described Uganda’s suspension of 10 NGOs and restrictions on internet access as “deeply worrying,” stressing that open access to information is essential for free and genuine elections. Uganda’s communications regulator says the temporary internet shutdown aims to prevent misinformation, electoral fraud and incitement to violence. The UN says all Ugandans must be able to participate in shaping their country’s future. Ugandans are voting today to elect a president and members of parliament. President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, is seeking a seventh term and faces several challengers, including opposition leader Bobi Wine.

Very disturbing that a number of human rights organisations, including the National Coalition Of Human Rights Defenders - Uganda, Chapter Four UG, Alliance for Election Finance Monitoring ACFIM, Human Rights Network For Journalists-Uganda & the Uganda National NGO Forum have all been ordered by the National Bureau For NGOs to suspend their activities. This is an extremely worrying development ahead of Thursday’s elections; the suspension must be lifted immediately.
