'Wisdom Learning Center Nakivale' represents a youth initiative supported by your generosity with focus on English literacy, education, art, self-employment and self-reliance in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda. Nakivale is one of the oldest refugee settlements in Uganda, located in the south of the country and the thrid biggest settlement according to its population. Nakivale accomodates over
125.000 refugees from DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan. Over 60% of the population is represented by children (UNHCR reports, 2017). The encounter with the reality of the life in the settlement, the stories and experiences of the youth and the findings of the research, brought me closer to the needs and resources available. Despite the limited conditions and the harsh reality, the youth represents a very resourceful group, and their strengths, talents, hopes and strive for development can be seen in many of their initiatives and ongoing projects within their communities. They are able to bring up sustainable ideas, to find solutions for their challenges, even more when they are guided and provided with minimum of resources from the organizations active in the camp. Education, knowledge and information represent another key factor in development and along all benefits of education, it empowers and sustains hope in achieving a better future. Therefore, getting education is extremely important as it is a preventive and protective factor for the many risks which children are exposed to in the camp and increases their chances for becoming self-sufficient. However, even though education in schools is free and accessible to all, the poverty, family challenges and illiteracy are keeping high numbers of children out of schools. A youth group started in the beginning of the year a 'English school' operating both for children and adults, as they acknowledge the importance of English literacy for further school enrollment, integration and better colaboration with the local Ugandan communities and increasement of employment opportunities. They asked for our support for constructing a permanent structure in their community, where their activities can take place in a proper environment, increasing the quaility of the education provided and the possibility of reaching higher numbers of students. The budget required for constructing the learning center is of 5000 euro (aprox. 20 million UGX) which will consist in 3 class rooms for English literacy and one class room for art activities.
