In April 2024, Acori Child and Family Program, lunched a transformative Poultry Rearing Project targeting 15 youths from Voice Now Youth Group. This group serves as a safe space for both enrolled and non-enrolled youth to meet, share community challenges, and collectively devise practical solutions. The poultry project was one such solution, born out of these conversations and designed to equip youth with sustainable livelihood skills to combat poverty and promote independence.
The overarching aim of the project was to provide young people with an accessible income-generating activity that would enable them to meet their basic needs while cultivating long-term entrepreneurial habits. By equipping participants with technical knowledge, resources, and a growth mindset, the project sought to reduce youth vulnerability, foster self-reliance, and encourage meaningful engagement in productive economic activities ultimately steering youth away from negative peer influences and unproductive lifestyles.
One of the most outstanding success stories from this initiative is that of Saleh Acup, a highly motivated and visionary member of the youth group. Upon his selection as a beneficiary, Saleh received 13 Sasso chickens, a dual-purpose breed known for its disease resistance, hardiness, and ease of management, making it an ideal choice for first-time poultry farmers in rural communities. In addition, he received a supply of poultry feed sufficient for one month, ensuring a smooth start to his farming journey.
Rather than spending the money immediately, Saleh made a strategic investment decision. At the time, he already owned four goats. Using the income from his poultry sales, he purchased two additional goats, bringing his total to six. Over time, he continued caring for his animals, and when market conditions improved, he sold all six goats and used the proceeds to purchase a heifer a much higher-value livestock asset that marked a significant milestone in his journey toward agricultural entrepreneurship.
Today, Saleh is seen as more than just a beneficiary of a youth project he is a role model in his community. His growth from raising chickens to managing a productive livestock portfolio demonstrates the true impact of empowering youth with the right tools, knowledge, and encouragement. The heifer not only increases his household income potential but also positions him for future expansion into dairy farming.
Saleh’s story is a testament to the power of vision, resilience, and well-targeted support. It reflects the broader goals of the Poultry Rearing Project equipping youth to take charge of their economic futures and become agents of change in their communities.
Acori Child and Family Program continues to follow up with Saleh and his peers, offering guidance and monitoring progress to ensure long-term sustainability of the gains achieved. His journey is living proof that a small investment, when matched with determination and planning, can lead to a lifetime of transformation.
