Lynne M post from Yesterday. We are still travelling to Kampala but had a three hour break this evening on the Nile river on a sunset cruise. It’s been lovely.

192 people seen in 6 days it’s been an amazingly successful trip. Sad to be leaving Kumi today for the trip back.

Hannah’s news.
A sad day for the team as we set left Kumi. Our guest house - North East Villa has been home from home for the last week and James and his team always look after us brilliantly. Bus loaded we started the long trip back to Entebbe. The journey is long, hot and uncomfortable but we punctuated it with a stop in Jinja to do a sunset cruise of the river Nile. Our guides were fabulous and very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and the team enjoyed some delicious snacks and an open bar!!! The trip was a lovely restful and enjoyable interlude… before we got back onto the bus for another hellish 4 hours on the bus along bouncy busy roads ( including a pit stop to drop off 4 chickens that the driver had stored in the boot for his family!) we finally arrived back at Gorilla Guest House shaken and tired at 11.45pm!!! Straight to bed as another early start tomorrow to fit in a visit to a Chimpanzee Sanctuary before we start our long flights home!!! Counting down to my hot shower….

Hannah’s post from today
WOW JUST WOW. This is a day I will never forget. I woke this morning with a sense of dread - after our mammoth day yesterday we were extremely low on equipment - we only had 5 adult wheelchairs left , a few specialist children’s chairs and lots of crutches and walkers. We were also expecting 53 patients who were travelling over 6 hours to get to us and who we hadn’t been able to cancel as they had already started their journeys. I knew the day would be filled with disappointment and frustration for the patients we couldn’t help and the team who couldn’t help them. Still I tried to stay positive - ‘take everyone’s details , assess their needs and we will see that they get the equipment they need on the next trip’ I told the therapists. Then the lorry arrived full of patients. Myself, Sheena and Harriet started to register the patient with heavy hearts - but it soon became evident that - rather than the patients we had been expecting - these new patients mostly needed …. Crutches and walkers!! There were also several children with complex needs but for each child the therapists were able to locate exactly the right piece of equipment for them - or managed to amalgamate several pieces of equipment to get the desired result. I even sent one parent home to get a wheelchair they had been allocated for their child during our last distribution that the child had outgrown and that recycled wheelchair turned out to be the perfect fit for another patient! Incredibly by the end of the day 34 patients were seen and EVERYONE went home with a piece of equipment they desperately needed! An absolute miracle! As the grateful patients loaded back onto their cattle wagon to begin their long journey home there were cheers and waves from everyone - and a lot of happy tears were shed by the team!!! We have finished one day early - but pretty much everything we brought has been distributed and we have been truly humbled by the patients we have met here and their stories of hardship , hope and resilience. I am also awestruck by the professionalism, care and dedication that each member of this team has shown to both the patients and each other. Time for beer and bed!
