Thrilled to have officially commenced our livelihood training on rabbit production and management in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement today!

Through skills training, we are empowering both refugee and host communities with practical knowledge to drive sustainable growth and self-reliance.

Kaya, a farmer by background, was forced to flee his home and seek refuge in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement. Like many others, displacement disrupted his livelihood and access to basic necessities. At one point, Kaya was cut off from food rations, forcing him to rely on casual labor to survive. He worked tirelessly engaging in construction, digging for others, and cultivating small plots of land to provide for himself.

Despite these hardships, Kaya remained determined to rebuild his life.

Through the support of Liftup Community Initiative (LCI), Kaya received 30 chicks along with training in poultry management and production. This intervention marked a turning point in his life. With the knowledge and skills he gained, Kaya was able to construct a proper poultry house and care effectively for his birds.

Kaya now speaks of renewed hope. He shares that the trauma he once carried has significantly reduced, as he has found purpose and stability through poultry farming. Every day, upon returning home from his labor work, he first checks on his chickens to ensure they are well-fed and safe.

Looking ahead, Kaya is optimistic. He plans to expand his poultry project by hatching eggs once the chickens begin laying, creating a sustainable source of income and food for himself.

Kaya’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, the impact of livelihood support, and how targeted interventions can restore dignity and hope among refugees.

Alice Kabang was trained in poultry production and management by Liftup Community Initiative (LCI). With this support, she built a safe shelter for her chickens to protect them from wild animals.

She received 30 chicks and takes good care of them by providing feed and vitamins. Alice plans to hatch eggs to grow her project and sell mature chickens for income. She has also started rearing goats to support her family, including her son in Senior 5.

Beyond her own home, Alice shows kindness by helping care for her sick neighbor who cannot manage heavy work. Her story is one of resilience, hard work, and community spirit.

Agnes is a strong and inspiring mother of three whose journey reflects resilience and hope.

After being abandoned by her husband, life became extremely difficult for her and her children. However, through training in hairdressing by one of our partners and start-up capital support from Liftup Community Initiative (LCI), Agnes was able to open her own salon business.

Today, she sells hair waves, plaits hair, and earns income from her services. Agnes keeps proper records of her business and has even gone a step further to train fellow refugees, empowering others within her community.

“Life was very hard, but after receiving this support, I gained courage,” Agnes shares. “I promise to manage my business well so that I can support my children and meet our basic needs.”

At LCI, we are proud to support resilient individuals like Agnes who are transforming challenges into opportunities and building a better future for their families.

At Liftup Community Initiative (LCI), we are empowering refugees, IDPs, and host communities through direct cash support to help them start small businesses and meet their basic needs.

Last week, 20 beneficiaries received over 20 million Ugandan Shillings, each receiving 1.2 million, in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement.

This support is helping families rebuild their lives, earn income, and become more self-reliant.
Cash assistance gives people the freedom to decide what matters most for their survival and future.
