QUEEN ELIZABETH MEDICAL FOUNDATION UGANDA JOINED THE WORLD TO COMMEMORATE THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

On 25th November 2025, Queen Elizabeth Medical Foundation Uganda (QEMF) proudly joined the rest of the organizations and community actors to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that amplifies the call to end violence in all its forms in kyaka II refugee settlement.

As part of our commitment to protecting and empowering women and girls especially young mothers in the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, QEMF conducted a special outreach where we distributed Mama Kits to expectant and young mothers.

This support was made possible through a generous donation from Mr. GEORGE SCHNEIDER* , whose contribution is helping to promote safe deliveries and improve maternal health outcomes in our community. We are deeply grateful for this life-changing support.

We further engaged the community through sensitization sessions, encouraging everyone to stand up against GBV, promote respect, and build safer homes for women, girls, and all vulnerable persons.

As we continue with the campaign, we appreciate the entire community for the unity, cooperation, and strong spirit shown towards ending gender-based violence. Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more empowered society. Queen Elizabeth Medical Foundation Staff Participate in Gender Handbook Training in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement

The staff of Queen Elizabeth Medical Foundation (QEMF) recently took part in a three-day training on the use of the Gender Handbook for Humanitarian Action. The training, which was facilitated by UN Women, brought together humanitarian actors operating in the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement to strengthen their capacity to mainstream gender in humanitarian response.

The sessions covered key areas of the Handbook, including the fundamentals of gender in emergencies, integration of gender perspectives across the humanitarian programme cycle, and sector-specific guidance on health, protection, education, and livelihoods. Through interactive discussions, group work, and case studies, participants gained practical skills on how to identify the different needs, priorities, and capacities of women, men, girls, and boys in humanitarian contexts.

QEMF staff actively engaged in the training, sharing experiences from their ongoing work in health and community protection. They highlighted the importance of applying gender-sensitive approaches in addressing sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) in the refugee settlement. The training further emphasized the need for humanitarian actors to ensure that women and girls are not only beneficiaries but also leaders and decision-makers in programmes affecting their lives.

At the close of the training, participants expressed their appreciation to UN Women for building their capacity to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in emergency settings. For QEMF, this training was particularly valuable, as the organization continues to lead GBV prevention and response initiatives in both the settlement and host community.

This training was so useful as QEMF staff will apply the knowledge gained to strengthen the implementation of GBV activities, with a focus on reducing violence and creating a safer, more inclusive environment for all.

On women's Day, Queen Elizabeth Medical Foundation Uganda, in partnership with BULAM, conducted an integrated medical outreach in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement to commemorate International Women’s Day. This initiative was dedicated to supporting and empowering refugee women by ensuring access to essential maternal healthcare services.

During the outreach, a total of 400 pregnant mothers received critical medical and laboratory services, helping to safeguard their health and that of their unborn children. Additionally, 250 mothers who are due for delivery within the next two months were provided with MAMA KITS. These kits contain essential supplies to facilitate safe and hygienic deliveries, reducing the risks associated with childbirth in resource-limited settings.

This outreach reflects our ongoing commitment to improving maternal health and reducing maternal and infant mortality, especially among vulnerable communities. By integrating various healthcare services, we aim to provide quality and timely medical support to expectant mothers, ensuring they receive the care they need for a safe pregnancy and delivery.

As we celebrated International Women’s Day, we recognized the importance of investing in women’s health as a key pillar for community development. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all healthcare professionals, volunteers, and partners who made this initiative a success. Queen Elizabeth Medical Foundation Uganda remains dedicated to strengthening healthcare access and advocating for the well-being of women and children, particularly in refugee settlements.

On October 11th, Queen Elizabeth Medical Foundation (QEMF) proudly joined the global community in celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child by distributing sanitary pads to adolescent girls in the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. Recognizing the critical importance of menstrual hygiene management for girls' health and well-being, we aimed to empower girls and break the stigma surrounding menstruation. Access to sanitary pads ensures that girls can attend school with confidence, reducing absenteeism and promoting their education.
The event was not only a celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges girls face, particularly in refugee settings. Through discussions, we highlighted the need for gender equality and advocated for the rights of girls to education, health, and safety. QEMF remains committed to supporting the health and empowerment of girls in vulnerable communities.
