The Nguzo Opportunity Promotion Empowerment Initiative (NOPEI) confirms that in some parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo under the control of AFC/M23 forces, the security of the population has significantly improved. We observe that discrimination based on ethnicity or language is no longer visible, and people are able to speak and live freely.
NOPEI, an organization founded by refugees, welcomes the decision of many displaced individuals to return to their country after recognizing that the conditions which forced them to flee have changed.
Many have now returned home and regained access to their property, including land that had been taken from them by armed groups such as the FDLR, Wazalendo, and others, as well as under previous poor leadership.
In areas currently administered by AFC/M23, peace is increasingly evident, particularly in cities such as Goma and Bukavu, as well as in territories including Masisi, Rutshuru, and South Kivu.
The Founder of NOPEI, Munyamirindi Gatware, who lived as a refugee for more than 30 years, expresses his deep appreciation upon returning to his homeland in North Kivu Province, where he was born. Having been displaced since 1995, he has now successfully returned after decades in exile.
At present, NOPEI has relocated its operations to the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a focus on North Kivu and South Kivu.
The organization aims to provide education and support to communities affected by prolonged conflict, including individuals who have spent many years in the forests without access to education or adequate livelihoods.
NOPEI is actively working to reunite separated families, strengthen unity and reconciliation, and support community rebuilding through collective action. Its interventions also include advocacy for education, promotion of human rights, peacebuilding initiatives, and family reunification programs.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Founder of NOPEI, Munyamirindi Gatware, for his decision to return to his country of origin and for his continued commitment to serving and supporting his fellow Congolese.
