Today, we proudly celebrate six outstanding MSMEs that emerged as winners of the FreshValue Innovation Challenge 2026, recognised during the UG Catalyst Summit 2026 as part of the World MSME Day celebrations.

These inspiring entrepreneurs are more than award winners; they are innovators, problem-solvers, and changemakers. Through their businesses, they are improving access to affordable, safe, and nutritious fruits and vegetables while building stronger, more resilient agrifood systems for Uganda. Their passion, resilience, and commitment remind us that MSMEs are at the heart of transforming food systems and creating sustainable livelihoods.

🏆 Theme 1: Business Models that Engage the Private Sector in the European Union: This category recognised MSMEs that are building internationally competitive businesses by leveraging EU technologies and innovations, strengthening export readiness through quality and food safety standards, creating partnerships with European investors and buyers, promoting local value addition, and embracing digital solutions to expand market opportunities.

HAPPENING NOW | Celebrating World MSME Day 2026! 🎉

GAIN Uganda is proud to join the government, private sector, and development partners in celebrating World MSME Day 2026 at the UG Catalyst Summit.

Speaking at the event, the GAIN Uganda Country Director congratulated the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, the National Planning Authority, and Innovation Village for convening this important platform that recognizes the vital contribution of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to Uganda's economic transformation.

She emphasized that healthy businesses need healthy people, and healthy people depend on access to nutritious food. This is why GAIN is committed to supporting MSMEs across Uganda's food system, from farmers and processors to millers, retailers, market vendors, and food innovators.

MSMEs are the backbone of Uganda's food value chain. Their work determines the availability, affordability, safety, and nutritional quality of the food that reaches our communities. The UG Catalyst Summit starts tomorrow!

GAIN Uganda, in partnership with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, the National Planning Authority, Innovation Village, and other stakeholders, will convene the UG Catalyst Summit at MoTIV, Bugolobi, as part of Uganda's World MSME Day celebrations.

MSMEs are at the heart of Uganda's economic transformation, driving innovation, job creation, and resilient food systems. GAIN Uganda is proud to partner with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, the National Planning Authority, Innovation Village, and other stakeholders to commemorate UN International MSME Day 2026 through the UG Catalyst Summit (25–27 June 2026).

Speaking ahead of the celebrations, the GAIN Uganda Country Director highlights the critical role that Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play in driving Uganda’s economic transformation through job creation, income generation, agro-processing, and value addition.

With MSMEs accounting for approximately 90% of enterprises and operating across production, processing, distribution, retail, and food services, they are central to ensuring the availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality of nutritious foods for Ugandan consumers.

As part of the celebrations, GAIN Uganda and the Ministry launched the FreshValue Innovation Challenge 2026 to identify and support innovative MSMEs and youth-led enterprises transforming Uganda’s fruit and vegetable value chains.
The Challenge focuses on:
✅ Engaging the private sector and European partnerships to strengthen horticulture.
✅ Integrating youth into high-value segments of fruit and vegetable value chains.

Winning enterprises will receive seed funding, technical assistance, mentorship, and investment readiness support.

🏆 Winners will be announced on 27 June 2026 during the International MSME Day celebrations.

Reflection on Uganda’s 2026/2027 Budget

As stakeholders reflect on Uganda’s 2026/2027 Budget, GAIN Uganda Country Director, Damali, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the settlement of outstanding government payments to the private sector. Timely payments are critical for business continuity, improved cash flow, investor confidence, and sustained economic growth.

She also highlighted concerns over rising prices of essential household commodities and fuel due to increased taxation. Ensuring that basic necessities remain affordable is vital for protecting household welfare which greatly affects the consumption of the healtheir diets for people.

As implementation begins, strong collaboration between Government and the private sector will be key to unlocking opportunities, addressing challenges, and advancing inclusive economic development.
