What stands between a person and the NCD medicine or medical device they need?

Sometimes the barrier is not the product itself. It may be how medicines are selected, regulated, forecasted, procured, priced, or financed.

The new Advancing Access: A practical advocacy toolkit for improving access to NCD medicines, diagnostics and medical devices helps advocates unpack these barriers and understand the policy and operational levers that can change them.

Developed by Alliance and the Policy Lab at the University of Geneva, the toolkit is designed for national, regional, and international advocates as well as people living with NCDs, health professionals, and other allies.

For NCD Alliance East Africa, this is a valuable resource for connecting national realities, identifying common access barriers across countries, and strengthening advocacy for practical policy solutions.

Because access barriers are not technical inevitabilities. They are systems that can be changed.

What if East African countries used their collective strength to make essential NCD medicines more accessible?

The EAC Regional NCD Framework targets 10 NCD commodities for regional pooled procurement by 2030.

This is what regional cooperation can look like: countries working together to address shared challenges in access, affordability, and supply.

🔴 NCDs are already a major part of Uganda's health burden.

The EAC Regional NCD Framework identifies NCDs as accounting for more than one-third of deaths in Uganda and highlights prevention, early detection, and access to care as critical areas for action.

Uganda does not need another commitment that stays on paper.

We need sustained investment and implementation to prevent illness, detect disease early, and ensure people receive the care they need.
