We collaborated with Afri_Digital in the “Lesela as Calico” Patternmaking Workshop held at Xenson Art Space in collaboration with the Barkcloth Center Kampala. This marked Day One of the workshop series, setting the foundation for a process of experimentation, collaborative inquiry, and shared learning that will continue to unfold in the subsequent sessions.

The workshop created an experimental and collaborative learning environment where participants explored DIY plastic mannequin making, challenged conventional approaches to garment construction through drafting Bunka basic sloper blocks for the first time, and engaged in collective problem solving around patternmaking practices.

As the Barkcloth Center, our role continues to focus on creating spaces where indigenous material knowledge, craft research, and contemporary design practices intersect. Hosting workshops such as these allows us to rethink the future of African textile knowledge systems while reconnecting with histories, techniques, and forms of making that have long existed across the continent.

The ongoing exploration of *Pattern Magic II* by Tomoko Nakamichi opens new conversations around form, structure, experimentation, and reparative research in indigenous textile and craft knowledge(s) from the African continent.

Pattern Magic II is curated as part of the AFRI-Lab Workshop Series and is supported by The Bold Woman Fund, an initiative of Bold in Africa and the British Council through the Creative DNA Programme 2026.
