Ainamazima Simon says his life before getting hearing aids was a struggle. He had to rely on lip-reading in class (a rather tedious task), and was always asking teachers to repeat themselves.

However, his life changed significantly after getting his first pair of hearing aids while in university. For him, it was like a whole new world because he could finally do things he had trouble doing without hearing aids. He could even participate in conversations more easily.

Simon shares that people were surprised by the change in him and asked him why he had suddenly become social. He says hearing aids made it possible for him.

For many like Simon, hearing aids have made everyday life more accessible.

On the 18th April, UFHOH hosted a capacity-building session led by David Nangosi to understand the Global Disability Summit: its origins, purpose, and why it matters in today’s push for disability inclusion. The purpose of the training was to equip participants with knowledge on understanding the 2025 GDS Commitments and how to follow up on their implementation and monitoring.

The session explored how the GDS came to be, the global actors behind it, and its role in shaping commitments around key areas such as inclusive education, accessible healthcare, and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities. Participants were also taken through the different themes that have been highlighted over the years and the practical steps being taken globally to turn these commitments into action.

Beyond the theory, the training created space for reflection on what these global conversations mean in our local context. How do we ensure that these commitments are not just discussed at international forums, but actually felt in our communities?

Participants were also active. They asked eye-opening questions and also shared ideas on things we could do differently to ensure that the commitments are brought to our communities, including strategies for the implementation and monitoring of the 2025 GDS Commitments.

Sessions like these are a reminder that awareness is a critical first step, because you cannot advocate for what you do not fully understand.

As we continue to build knowledge and capacity within its network, the goal remains clear: to ensure that hard-of-hearing voices are informed, equipped, and actively engaged in shaping the conversations that affect them. Participants left with a clearer understanding of the 2025 GDS Commitments and practical ideas on how to implement and monitor them, this workshop made possible with supoort from Disability Rights Fund

On 16th March , we held a consultative meeting with key stakeholders to obtain information that will support the formulation of a monitoring tool for the handbook on supporting hard of hearing learners in inclusive schools that we launched last year in September. The consultation, which was very interactive, was led by Dr Abdu Busuulwa, a senior lecturer from Kyambogo University.

Participants included teachers from both primary and secondary schools, school adminstrators, and hard of hearing learners (students and graduates), gathered to share ideas, experiences, and suggestions on how this process should be carried out. We explored important questions to ask, practical and effective ways to track progress, and how to ensure the handbook is truly making a difference in schools. The views, opinions, and suggestions shall be analyzed and be incorporated leading to the final copy of the Monitoring tool which will be validated and later leveraged to strengthen how we measure impact and improve support for hard of hearing learners. Made possible with support from Disability Rights Fund

Friends make life richer—and everyone deserves to be included.

Ahead of 'World Hearing Day' tomorrow, here’s how you can support a friend with hearing loss:

- Take turns when talking so your friend can follow the conversation
- Face your friend when speaking
- Help, or call for help, if their hearing aid isn’t working
- Include your friend in play and group activities
- Never make fun of people with hearing loss or hearing aids
