Every May 18th, the world celebrates International Museum Day. We share our reflections on the critical role museums play as pillars of African memory, identity, and civilizational continuity.
Africaโs heritage is not merely about the past โ it is the foundation upon which future generations will understand who they are, where they come from, and the civilizations that shaped our continent.
As calls for the repatriation and reparations of African artifacts from foreign museums continue, there is also an urgent need to invest in community museums and heritage institutions across Uganda and Africa to preserve our history within our own communities.
At Kabalega Foundation, our efforts towards this vision are through the envisioned Kabalega Cultural Square (KCS), a heritage-centered initiative that includes a community museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich legacy of Bunyoro-Kitara and African heritage. (More about this project at: https://kcs.kabalegafoundation.org/)
Museums must no longer be viewed as optional cultural spaces. They are institutions of memory, education, identity, and future-building.
