In recent years, Uganda has witnessed serious cases of human trafficking involving the exploitation of young women and girls under the guise of opportunity, mobility, and influence. These cases highlight a critical reality: trafficking does not always present as overt criminality. It can occur within settings that appear legitimate and involve individuals who command trust or authority.

Periods of transition—when people pursue work, mobility, education, or new beginnings, can also increase exposure to deceptive offers that traffickers use to exploit vulnerability.

As 2026 starts, here is what you need to know about human trafficking to support early risk recognition and safeguard yourself and others.

January marks Human Trafficking Awareness Month. A time to confront the harsh reality that millions of people, especially women and girls are exploited each year often in environments where traffickers operate with impunity. Awareness is essential, but awareness alone isn’t enough.

Combatting human trafficking requires comprehensive efforts, with legal and economic empowerment of vulnerable communities, especially women and girls as the cornerstone for agency, confidence and economic self-sufficiency. Equipping women and girls with knowledge, practical skills and opportunities gives them the power to break cycles of exploitation. That is where FEMJUSTICE focuses. Making the law accessible and simple while providing the tools and resources women need to strengthen their agency, build confidence and achieve real independence.

Awareness matters. But true change comes when women are empowered to act.

📢 Partnership Announcement

We are thrilled to announce our official partnership with AniScholar Career Hub to empower youth especially women and girls across universities and TVET institutions with the legal and economic tools to claim their rights and build independent, self-determined futures.

This partnership is a strategic advancement of our Pillar 2: Women’s Economic Empowerment, and strengthens our broader mission to ensure women not only access opportunities but are equipped to navigate them with confidence, agency, and legal awareness.

Through this partnership, we are ensuring that women are not only , , and , but also informed, protected, and positioned to secure sustainable livelihoods.

Why This Matters:

Economic independence strengthens a woman's ability to exercise her legal rights, while legal awareness reinforces her capacity to pursue economic opportunities. When these two forces align, women gain real, lasting power over their futures.

Thank you, AniScholar Career Hub, for partnering with us to shape the next generation of empowered, rights-aware, and economically independent women.

Follow our page for upcoming details on the program launch and how you can support this initiative.

Knowledge is power💫

As part of our continued commitment to empowering girls and advancing gender equality, the FEMJUSTICE team conducted an outreach session at Nadunget Seed Secondary School in Moroto. The discussion centred on living a purposeful life and making worthy choices, encouraging the students to reflect deeply on how their daily decisions shape their futures.

We reminded them that their dreams are valid and challenged them to stay committed to those dreams, taking consistent steps toward who they want to become. Each student was tasked to write down where they see themselves ten years from now and use that as a vision to hold onto and live out daily because becoming begins with believing and seeing yourself as capable.

At FEMJUSTICE, we believe that empowerment begins with knowledge, mentorship, and meaningful dialogue. When girls are guided to dream boldly and choose wisely, they grow into the confident, resilient, and economically independent women who lead transformation in their communities. When we invest in young minds, we plant the seeds of lasting change.

Last week, we convened a Regional Stakeholder Dialogue on Access to Justice in Karamoja at Seven Ranges Hotel, Moroto under the theme: "Justice at the Margins: Leveraging Partnerships & Documentation of best practices for Inclusive Justice in Karamoja."

The dialogue brought together stakeholders from the Judiciary, police, uganda priUganda Police ForcendUganda Law SocietyanUganda Human Rights Commissionights Commission, KARAMOJA RIGHTS ADVOCATES NETWORK (KRANET), community leaders, CSOs, activists, and elders to discuss the access to justice situation in Karamoja and how the formal and informal justice systems can leverage partnerships to ensure justice is accessible, equitable, and culturally informed.

This dialogue reaffirmed that justice is a right, not a privilege and achieving equitable access to justice requires collaboration, grassroots legal education, and systemic reforms.

We extend our sincere appreciation to ouCharles Donaldson Ogira Donaldson Ogira, our panelists, and participants for fostering a dialogue that advances inclusive justice in Karamoja.

Thirty years of the Beijing Declaration, gender gaps persist and many promises on women’s rights remain unmet. As the Secretary-General rightly emphasized all leaders must stand with women and girls to challenge discrimination and gender inequalities.

Our call to duty bearers is clear:
✅ Laws alone are not enough; they must be backed by consistent implementation and accountability to ensure they are enforced in practice.
✅ Commitments must be matched by consistent implementation and real change.
✅ Every duty bearer must act to protect, respect, and fulfill the rights of every woman and girls.

Justice Data Spotlight

🌍 Did you know? Only 4% of Ugandans with legal problems seek legal redress in Court. According to the Justice Needs and Satisfaction survey, most people rely on informal systems or community/based mechanisms to resolve disputes.

This data variance highlights a critical gap in access to justice and raises key questions: Why are formal channels underutilized? How effective are informal systems? How can the informal structures/mechanisms be strengthened to ensure justice is fair and accessible for all?

As we approach our community engagements, we want to hear from you: Who do you turn to when faced with a legal problem, and why?
