What if the very things we throw away could fuel a cleaner future?

Through a community skills training provided by Sawa World in partnership with Amaaka Suubi Organisation, participants in the Katanga community, Central Uganda proved this.

The training was not just about making briquettes, but also how to turn everyday waste into something of value and a skill into an income opportunity, while reducing pressure on the environment.

Sometimes, a cleaner future does not start with something new. It starts with seeing what we already have differently.

Is your organization, youth group, or community interested in learning a local income skill? Get in touch and let's plan your skills training.

A farmer can plant crops, w**d on time, and wait patiently for the rains. But if the soil is exhausted, the yield will show it.

That is why taking care of the soil is just as important as taking care of the crop. Biochar is one simple way farmers can restore their soil. Made from carbonized organic materials such as coffee husks, biochar improves the condition of the soil and creates a better environment for crops to grow.

Healthier soil can mean stronger crops, better yields, more income, and a better livelihood for farming families.

What does it take to keep the next generation of young coffee farmers on the farm?

For the smallholder youth coffee farmers in Uganda, it takes more than coffee. It takes opportunity and the confidence to build a future for themselves.

This was the message our Executive Director, Sheila Ampumuza shared two years ago, as Sawa World joined our partner, Fondazione Lavazza , in Turin, Italy in 2024 to celebrate their 20 years of impact.

Together, we highlighted how the Ujana Coffee Project is motivating youth to stay engaged in farming while diversifying their income using easy-to-start local income skills. When we invest in young farmers, we’re growing the future of coffee.

Hosting guests at the Sawa World Solution Center is always a great joy, especially when we share the same dream of seeing communities transform and people build better lives for themselves.

Yesterday, we were honored to host Rt. Rev. Michael Okwii Esakhan, Bishop of Kumi, together with leaders from the Diocese of Kumi.

It was an opportunity to share ideas and explore how we can align the Diocese's 25th Anniversary Initiative vision with Sawa World's community-led approach to transformation.

At the heart of our conversation was a shared belief: people and communities already have great potential. What they need is access to practical local income skills and opportunities that can help them improve their livelihoods and create a better future.

We believe transformation starts with people, their ideas, experiences and a determination to move forward. We are grateful for this visit and excited about the journey ahead.

Do you share a passion for transforming communities? We would love to host you at the Sawa World Solution Centre. Call us on +256789981872 or send us an email at [email protected].

From Passion to Profit!
Sawa World recently conducted a fruit juice-making training with the amazing women of St. John’s Women’s Group, equipping them with practical income-generating skills to transform locally available fruits into nutritious, marketable products.

With little capital, the right skills, and determination, women can create businesses, support their families, and build a brighter future for their communities.

Sawa World is proud to walk alongside communities as they turn their potential into sustainable livelihoods.

Knowledge already exists. The question is: how do we make sure it is shared? That’s why Sawa World doesn’t simply ask, “What knowledge can we give?” Instead, we ask, “What knowledge already exists, and how can we help share it?” Because every community holds valuable stories, ideas, experiences, and solutions worth learning from. 🙌🏾 Want to discover more? At Sawa World, we believe communities already hold many of the solutions they need.

Our model discovers practical, locally developed solutions that are simple to start, affordable, and built around resources that communities already have. We then empower youth to turn these ideas into action, creating opportunities, solving challenges, and building stronger communities from within.

Meaningful change starts with recognizing the resources we already have; it doesn't always require more resources.
