At Sawa World, we have our own version of knowledge going viral, we call it the “Spark Effect.”

It happens when a person learns a local income skill, turns it into an income opportunity for themselves, and then shares that skill with someone else. That person can then pass it on to another, creating a ripple of income skills, ideas and opportunities.

When the world went quiet during lockdown, Francis could have waited too for a better time.

Instead, he looked at the few resources he had to start his goat farming venture. That small beginning became something bigger.

Today, Francis is a goat farming expert, trainer, and Sawa World Solution Entrepreneur. From his farm in Kapeeka, Central Uganda, he is helping others see goat farming as a real business and a source of income.

When collaboration takes root, solutions can thrive.

We witnessed it this week when the Sawa World team had the pleasure of visiting the Uganda office of Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT), a not-for-profit organization supporting smallholder farmers to build stronger farms, and more resilient livelihoods while protecting the environment.

Our conversation with Francis, the Project Manager of Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture and Agroecology in Eastern Africa (Kcoa_khea) at BvAT, centered on a shared belief: that resilient farms, improved livelihoods, and a healthy environment are all part of the same story.

We explored how BvAT’s experience in agroecology and Sawa World’s approach of identifying, documenting, and sharing local income skills can come together to support smallholder farmers' livelihoods.

A youth in a farming community wakes up to a different reality from one in an urban area.

But, beneath those differences, the hope is often the same: to earn a living, contribute to their community, and build a future they can be proud of.

The Sawa World approach starts there, with what young people already know, have, and do. That's the heart of our mantra: "Solutions From Within." First, we identify income skills that work locally, share knowledge on those skills with people so they can turn them into opportunity.

Progress begins with seeing new possibilities in what you already have.

For Andrew, a coffee farmer and Sawa World Solution Entrepreneur, that meant looking at the piles of coffee husks left behind after processing and seeing more than just waste.

Those same coffee husks became the raw material for biochar, a simple, circular solution that improved his soil quality, reduced farm input costs, and helped increase his coffee yields.

After experiencing the benefits on his own farm, he now shares his knowledge with other farmers, helping them discover how resources already available around them can be transformed into valuable solutions for sustainable farming.

Across communities, entrepreneurs like Andrew are proving that when we rethink what we have, we can create solutions that strengthen livelihoods, reduce waste, and care for the land that sustains us.

Skills create the greatest impact when they are shared by people who live them every day.

For Hellen, a Sawa World Solution Entrepreneur, the most rewarding part of sharing her urban farming knowledge is seeing those she trained turn those skills into lasting impact; growing food for their families, creating extra income, and building new opportunities.

When local entrepreneurs share skills from their own experiences, people gain practical knowledge they can apply to their everyday lives.

What if you could grow vegetables and create an extra source of income using the space at your home?

That's the question a group of women from Amaaka Suubi, a local organization, explored when they visited the Sawa World Solution Centre in Kampala, Uganda for a hands-on learning experience in urban farming.

The atmosphere in our farm was filled with energy as the participants did practical demonstrations of urban farming techniques, vegetable production, herbs, and spices.

By the end of the training, the excitement was impossible to miss as the participants were ready to start, and it doesn't stop there, they want to share the knowledge with others, turning one training session into ripples across their community.
