We are rewriting the script on social protection and development in Africa. 🌍
For decades, the global development and humanitarian architectures have been incredibly skilled at naming what is missing. We are constantly flooded with indices of deficiency, dashboards of inadequacy, and reports that meticulously measure what our communities lack.
But at Civitas Africa, we are asking a different set of questions:
❓ Who built the systems that produce these gaps?
❓ Who benefits from maintaining them?
❓ And most importantly—what is already present, already practiced, and already thriving within our communities that constitutes a real alternative?
Today, we are proud to be part of the Alternatives to Deficits (AtD) Network along with our founding Founding Statement & Manifesto.
We are drawing a line in the sand. We refuse to begin our research with absence. Our work across mental health, social protection, and epistemic power is grounded in a core truth: our communities are not broken—the global arrangements around them are.
We aren't here to simply critique the status quo. Critique without a concrete proposal is just a form of comfort. The AtD Network is a space where rigorous, locally-owned research meets actionable policy, institutional redesign, and community-led modeling.
As our manifesto states: “We did not come to document the wound. We came to find the medicine that is already here—and to ask, together, what it would take to let it work.”
Join the network, challenge the assumptions, and let’s shift the narrative together.
