In Kenya’s Isiolo County, communities are paying the price for conservation.
Pastoralists report being displaced, harassed, and denied access to grazing land by conservancies operating under the Northern Rangelands Trust.
Those who speak out - including human rights defenders — face threats, intimidation, and lawsuits.
A new report by FIDH and AS finds that:
Victims have no real access to justice, despite local and
international guarantees.
• Land remains unregistered, cutting communities off from control and benefit-sharing.
Remedies are blocked by practical and procedural
barriers, both judicial and non-judicial.
• The report calls for urgent action:
Register community land,
Strengthen remedy pathways so that they meet the UN
Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, End reprisals against those defending rights.

Avocats Sans Frontières expresses its deep concern over the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.
These measures appear to target her independent reporting on serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.
Such acts of retaliation against a UN mandate holder undermine the credibility of the international human rights protection system.
Avocats Sans Frontières recalls that the independence of Special Rapporteurs is an essential guarantee of their ability to carry out their mandate. Efforts to intimidate or silence them threaten the foundations of accountability and the rule of law.
We join other civil society actors and international institutions in calling for the protection of Ms. Albanese and all human rights defenders operating within UN mechanisms. .tunisie

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the EU Day Against Impunity, it seems opportune to reaffirm the legal responsibilities of states under international law in the face of genocide.

States’ duty to prevent genocide is part of customary law and is enshrined in:

✅ 1948 Genocide Convention;
✅ 1998 Rome Statute;
✅ 2005 World Summit Outcome.

Genocide inflicts unspeakable horrors on populations, carves deep traumas within societies, and are a blatant infringement on core human rights values and peoples’ humanity on which our societies should be built. Yet genocide remains a present-day reality in the face of silence and inaction

A Review of the Assault on Journalists and Civic Freedoms During the Kawempe By-Election

The events of 13 March 2025 during the Kawempe North by-election highlight serious threats to civic freedoms in Uganda. Journalists were assaulted, equipment was destroyed, and citizens faced excessive force and arbitrary arrests.

⚖️ Why This Matters:
1️⃣ Press Freedom Under Threat: Attacking journalists undermines transparency and accountability.
2️⃣ Excessive Force: Suppressing peaceful assembly disregards constitutional rights.
3️⃣ Institutional Accountability: Key institutions must recommit to protecting civic space.

🔑 What Must Be Done?
• Security forces must uphold peaceful assembly rights and hold perpetrators accountable.
• Media organizations should support injured journalists.
• Institutions like ODPP and the Electoral Commission must promote free, fair elections.

This is a call to protect civic freedoms and ensure justice prevails. Let’s demand accountability and safeguard human rights for all!

During the discussions at today’s workshop, participants shared thought-provoking perspectives on the interplay between law, morality, societal norms and their impact on GBV. Here are some highlights:

1️⃣ “Where do we draw the line between morality, religion, and the law?” – A question posed by a participant, sparking a crucial debate on the balance of these three aspects in justice systems. What is the influence of religion on policy and law( in context of the marriage law in Uganda)

2️⃣ “Are the laws in place sufficient to protect women and girls from online harassment ?” – Dr. Fred, raising a critical issue on the efficacy of the law in protecting women and girls from online harassment

3️⃣ “The law does not regulate human behavior and relationships we need to invest in social norm change to ensure protection of women and girls from GBV” highlighting the limits of the law and the need to address deeper systemic issues
