At global finance talks this April, climate was sidelined. The Guardian
At the IMF and World Bank meetings, political pressure pushed climate issues out of focus, despite escalating crises.

Some experts called the situation โ€œbeyond absurd.โ€

Instead of accelerating climate action, discussions are shifting back toward fossil-inclusive strategies.

For developing countries, this is not abstract.
It is existential.

This moment reveals a simple truth: the energy transition is not just technical, it is political.

And today, that political will is wavering. A test of whether the global energy transition will finally listen to those who have been left at its margins.

For Africa, the stakes are clear.

This is a continent that contributes the least to global emissions, yet faces some of the most severe climate impacts. A continent rich in solar potential, critical minerals, and human capital yet still home to millions without access to electricity.

For too long, Africa has been positioned as a supplier of resources, of land, of potential but rarely as a decision-maker.

Santa Marta offers a different possibility.

A moment to move from extraction to transformation.

From participation to leadership.

Because a just energy transition will not be defined by ambition alone but by who it includes, and who it empowers.

Even in times of war, investment follows the future of energy. And that future is Africa.

Despite global instability and the ripple effects of the Iran-related conflict on energy markets, one trend remains clear: capital continues to flow into renewable energy and increasingly, into Africa.

Recent data shows that over $100 billion has already been invested by Gulf countries in renewable energy projects across the continent. This is not incidental. It reflects a growing recognition of Africaโ€™s central role in the global energy transition.

The drivers are clear:

๐Ÿ‘‰Africaโ€™s energy demand is rising fast.
๐Ÿ‘‰Its renewable potential solar, wind, green hydrogen is among the highest in the world.
๐Ÿ‘‰And the global transition simply cannot happen without it.

But this momentum raises a critical question:

Will Africa shape the transition or simply supply it?

Because while investment is growing, it remains uneven. Large-scale projects often move forward, but local energy access, community benefits, and long-term ownership are still not guaranteed.

2026 is a defining year for Africaโ€™s climate journey.

The continent has no shortage of commitments, strategies, and ambitions. The real challenge now is implementation.

Despite global progress on climate finance and just transition discussions, Africa still faces major gaps, limited funding, weak coordination, and slow project delivery. Meanwhile, climate impacts are already being felt across communities.

But this moment also presents an opportunity.

Effective climate action can expand energy access, create green jobs, and strengthen resilience across the continent.

The question is no longer what needs to be done, but how quickly and effectively it can be delivered.

At T**d Foundation, we believe climate action must be practical, inclusive, and locally driven, turning ambition into real impact. https://issafrica.org/iss-today/2026-africa-s-year-to-turn-climate-ambition-into-action?utm_source=chatgpt.com

As the climate crisis intensifies, Africa and Latin America remain central to shaping a sustainable and equitable energy future. Yet, the pathways toward renewable energy must be just, inclusive, and grounded in the realities of communities most affected.

T**d Foundation is pleased to share this upcoming webinar:

โ€œAccelerating Just Energy Transition in the Global South: Renewable Energy Pathways in Africa and Latin America.โ€

This conversation will explore:

๐ŸŸขWhat a Just Energy Transition truly means across different contexts
๐ŸŸขThe opportunities and challenges shaping renewable energy in Africa and Latin America
๐ŸŸขThe role of communities, policies, and financing in building a fossil fuel-free future
๐ŸŸขHow key global moments โ€” including the Santa Marta Conference, Mission 300, and the World Bank Spring Meetings โ€” can influence equitable energy transitions.

This webinar also creates space to strengthen collaboration across regions and identify shared advocacy and communication opportunities ahead of major global processes, including COP31.

The goal: connect 300 million people in Africa to electricity by 2030.

This commitment marks a significant step in tackling energy poverty across the continent. Today, millions of communities still lack reliable access to electricity, limiting opportunities in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and climate resilience.

At T**d Foundation, we see this as:

๐Ÿ‘An opportunity to scale sustainable energy solutions;
๐Ÿ‘A pathway to strengthen climate justice;
๐Ÿ‘A call for deeper collaboration between public, private, and community actors.

Access to energy is not just about infrastructure, it is about dignity, equity, and the future.

We call on African stakeholders, policymakers, and civil society to actively engage and ensure these investments translate into real impact on the ground.
