STATEMENT BY THE FEDERATION OF LIBERIAN COMMUNITIES IN EAST AFRICA ON THE PROPOSED ESTABLISHMENT OF A LIBERIA DIASPORA COMMISSION
The Federation of Liberian Communities in East Africa warmly welcomes the statement of His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia, acknowledging the Liberian Diaspora as a vital national asset and announcing the forthcoming proposal to establish a Liberia Diaspora Commission.
We commend the Government of Liberia for recognizing that Liberians abroad are not merely observers of national development, but active contributors, bringing skills, investment capital, professional expertise, and enduring national pride to Liberia’s growth. This acknowledgment affirms what diaspora communities have long demonstrated through remittances, investments, advocacy, and sustained engagement with national institutions.
As an organized regional body representing Liberian communities across East Africa, the Federation of Liberian Communities in East Africa views the proposed Diaspora Commission as a historic opportunity to formalize diaspora engagement in a structured, inclusive, and representative manner. We respectfully emphasize that the success of such a Commission will depend on the meaningful inclusion and recognition of established regional diaspora federations that have demonstrated leadership, coordination capacity, and accountability over time.
In this regard, we see a clear opportunity for the formal recognition of the Federation of Liberian Communities in East Africa as a strategic partner within the proposed Diaspora Commission framework. Our member communities across the East African region have remained united in promoting Liberia’s national interests, supporting community development initiatives, fostering youth leadership, and strengthening Liberia’s image within host countries.
We also welcome the President’s concern regarding diaspora-related housing investment losses and reaffirm our readiness to collaborate with the Government of Liberia to protect diaspora investments, promote transparency, and rebuild trust. A well-structured Diaspora Commission, working closely with recognized regional federations, will be instrumental in addressing such concerns and preventing future occurrences.
The Federation of Liberian Communities in East Africa stands ready to engage constructively with the Executive and the Honorable Legislature as the proposed legislation is developed and considered. We are confident that a Diaspora Commission built on inclusivity, regional representation, and institutional partnership will significantly enhance Liberia’s development agenda and strengthen the bond between the state and its citizens abroad.
We remain committed to supporting Liberia’s progress and to ensuring that the voice of Liberians in East Africa is effectively represented, heard, and valued in national decision-making processes.
