We understand that Caregivers also play a vital role in helping children understand their SRHR and as such training them on key issues affecting their children is very important. In communities where Sexual and Gender Based Violence against children is normalized, it is important that caregivers are brought to the front line in protection of the rights of their children and those of the community at large.

What started as a simple chat on empowerment became a reality.
In 2023, GIBEH had a conversation with Yuki Fijwara on the possibility of improving livelihoods with the communities of Mukono. This chat was the mark of a good start for a very young and simple organisation.
In 2024, we saw PLAS Japan pick interest in this program and to that effect tasked us to implement the RISE project (Resilient Livelihood Improvement and Strengthened Empowerment for Vulnerable families in Mukono District). Through this project, we were able to touch lives of different communities. When we provided hens and c***s to these families, we saw children go to school from that little money got from selling a tray of eggs, we saw children buy at least a book, even some got to put on shoes and afford a descent transport to their far schools. A parent once said that my child would not have completed primary seven had it not been for these chicken. We saw 6 hens and 2 c***s change lives of vulnerable families. The project eventually had to come to an end in 2025 and we are glad we left behind happy families for the time it lasted.
Despite this impact, many children in Bunankanda still find difficulty accessing secondary schools and are only left with limited choices (To finish primary and become house maids in Kampala and surrounding areas) or chose to get married. The secondary schools are quite far and those that can manage are kicked out by the costs.
Our dream is to have a vocational school atleast for the children who have completed P.7 so that they are not simply taken as maids but can get hand skills to better their lives through these really difficult situations.

THE ROLE OF PEER EDUCATORS IN ADVANCING COMMUNITY CHANGE.
AT GIBEH Uganda, we believe that Peer Educators play a big role in advancing change within the communities that we serve. This can only be achieved through giving them the sufficient training that is required on basic principles of human rights, sexual and gender based violence against children, teenage pregnancies to ensure that they deliver the message to their fellow peers in a more friendly manner that is easily understandable to all.
In our SPEAKS programme at GIBEH, we have adopted a peer to peer approach in helping to curb the situation of teenage pregnancies and SGBV in these areas in Mpunge subcounty.

Silence against children silences their voices.
When we keep quiet about the issues affecting the children within the communities, we bury them ourselves. In some communities in Mukono District, girls are abused and register teenage pregnacies as early as 13 years and yet the perpetrators are never brought to book. Their voices of these victims are silenced at the first instance when negotiations happen between their caregivers and the perpetrators. Lets RAISE AWARENESS on child abuse, lets not silence their voices

Mukono District leaders have joined forces with GIBEH and development partners to intensify efforts against sexual and gender-based violence affecting children. During a recent stakeholders’ meeting, findings from a survey revealed alarming rates of teenage pregnancy and exploitation among girls aged 12 to 17. The newly launched "Keep Her In School" program will utilize peer-to-peer education to empower children with vital knowledge on sexual health, safety, and abuse reporting. Leaders emphasized the importance of community involvement, extending the initiative beyond schools to include parents, local leaders, and community actors, in a bid to protect vulnerable children and break the silence surrounding abuse in Mukono District.
