SASCELLS One-Day Field Impact Update – Thursday, 2nd July 2026

On Thursday, 2nd July 2026, the Sarafinah Sickle Cell Society (SASCELLS) successfully conducted a high-impact one-day outreach to strengthen sickle cell screening services in Mukono District, made possible through the generous support of our funding partner, Sickle Forward.

Microhaem Test Kit Distribution

As part of this outreach, SASCELLS redistributed a total of 1,200 Microhaem sickle cell testing kits to three partner health facilities to increase access to free sickle cell screening services:

- Katoogo HC IV – 400 Microhaem sickle cell testing kits
- Nakifuma HC III – 200 Microhaem sickle cell testing kits
- Kasawo HC III – 600 Microhaem sickle cell testing kits

On-Site Sickle Cell Screening

In addition to distributing the testing kits, SASCELLS laboratory scientists worked alongside health facility staff to provide on-site sickle cell screening for children attending Young Child Clinic (YCC) services.

Katoogo HC IV

- 63 children screened
- 17 diagnosed with sickle cell disease
- 12 identified as sickle cell trait carriers
- 34 with normal haemoglobin

Nakifuma HC III

- 72 children screened
- 13 diagnosed with sickle cell disease
- 31 identified as sickle cell trait carriers
- 28 with normal haemoglobin

One-Day Impact

In a single day, SASCELLS achieved the following:

- Distributed 1,200 Microhaem sickle cell testing kits to three health facilities.
- Supported healthcare workers with on-site laboratory screening services.
- Screened 135 children for sickle cell disease.
- Identified 30 children living with sickle cell disease for referral, follow-up, and comprehensive care.
- Identified 43 children with the sickle cell trait, enabling families to receive education and genetic counselling.
- Confirmed 62 children with normal haemoglobin.

These achievements demonstrate the power of partnership in improving access to early diagnosis and quality healthcare for children and families affected by sickle cell disease.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our funding partner, Sickle Forward, for their unwavering commitment to strengthening sickle cell care in Uganda. Their continued investment in SASCELLS is enabling life-saving screening services to reach underserved communities and helping us move closer to a future where every child knows their sickle cell status early.

We also thank the district health authorities, healthcare workers, and the dedicated SASCELLS laboratory team for their professionalism and commitment to serving our communities.

Speaking after the meeting, the Principal Medical Officer at Goma Health Centre III, Dr. Sylvia Nanono, welcomed the partnership and commended Sarafina Sickle Cell Society and its funding partner, Sickle Forward, for investing in efforts to strengthen sickle cell care at the facility.

OFFICIAL DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with profound sorrow and deep sadness that the Sarafinah Sickle Cell Society (SASCELLS) announces the passing of our beloved volunteer, advisor, mentor, and brother, Mr. KISEKA RICHARD, who departed this life this morning 06/17th/2026.

Richard was a dedicated supporter of the sickle cell community whose compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment touched countless lives. Through his service to SASCELLS, he inspired hope, strengthened families, and contributed immensely to our mission of sharing love, hope, care, and awareness.

His kindness, humility, and selfless dedication will forever remain a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. The sickle cell community has lost a true champion, but his legacy of service and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of many.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, beneficiaries, and the entire SASCELLS family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
May God grant them strength, comfort, and peace.
