This is what medical trauma can look like in kids with SCD:

Before appointments: Crying, hiding, aggression, “I’m not sick”
During care: Shutting down, not talking, fighting staff, panic with needles
After: Anxiety, refusing meds, avoiding the hospital even during real pain
Long-term: Poor adherence, depression, PTSD-like symptoms

It’s not “being dramatic.”
It’s the brain learning: hospital = danger.

Kids with SCD aren’t giving us a hard time.
They’re having a hard time.

Our Co-Founder shared his family’s lived experience this week at the 5th Annual Uganda Sickle Cell Convention at Makerere University School of Public Health.

One of the hardest truths shared:
When pain is all a child knows, they forget what “normal” feels like.
Childhood is robbed of them even before life starts.

When anxiety and worry are all a parent knows, you constantly ask yourself:
When will this end? What if the next crisis is bigger?

It’s a journey of faith, hope, and resilience.

Reddie’s Battery Dies Faster: 120 Days vs 20 Days 🔋

Same job. Different lifespan. Big difference for Warriors.

Let Reddie explain.

1. Normal Cell
Lifespan: 120 days = 4 months
Round, flexible, glides through blood vessels. Delivers oxygen nonstop, your body makes a new ones easily. Energy stays steady.

2. Sickled Reddie.
Lifespan: 10-20 days = 3 weeks max
Stiff, C-shaped, gets stuck in vessels. Breaks apart way too fast.
Your body can’t make new cells fast enough leading to anemia + chronic fatigue.

3. Why this matters.
Fewer cells = less oxygen to muscles/brain = fatigue.
That’s why hydration, rest, and clinic checkups aren’t “extra” they’re survival tools

To every SCD Warrior: If your battery drains fast, rest isn’t quitting. It’s smart. You’re fighting a 100-day disadvantage every single day.
