ESUGA ELDERLY SUPPORT UGANDA was founded in 2021 by a group of enthusiastic activist and thinkers, who came together to improve and safeguard the lives of elderly persons in Uganda. ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
After carrying out research regarding elderly persons' rights and the gap between the young generation and the senior citizens, one of the founder members, Mr. Musa Balonde realized the need
for establishing an entity that can cater to and protect the interests of the elderly persons, who seem to be more vulnerable and open to multiple challenges ranging mainly
from psychosocial, health, and economic aspects. Nakitto Lailah who are also recognized as founding members of ESUGA. The idea was embraced, and the procedures to legally start such an entity started immediately. ESUGA ELDERLY SUPPORT UGANDA was founded in 2021 by a group of enthusiastic activist and thinkers, who came together with the objective of improving and safeguarding the lives of elderly persons in Uganda. They also realized the necessity of this establishment as a means of contributing to socio-economic development and meeting elderly persons’ needs which have been the driving force of their motivation. Another motivating factor was after conducting relevant research on how the elderly persons and their dependents live their day
to-day live hoods in Uganda, we found that, as second-generation parents, elderly persons find it very difficult to provide for themselves and their dependents the basic necessities in life such as; food, shelter, clothing, safe water, medical care and education, especially those impacted by conflict, displacement, land issues, and poverty. ESUGA has also decided to join the team of other visionaries yearning to impact and develop the lives elderly persons in Uganda. ESUGA like other Non-Governmental Organizations and International Humanitarian institutions, aim at achieving sustainable results from developmental activities and initiatives
to our communities, especially with the elderly people who are the disadvantaged ones. Since then, we targeted elderly persons faced with extreme poverty, social injustice and the
displaced ones, to provide assistance and opportunities for peaceful co-existence, better livelihoods and sustainable development in the country. This is in line with the National Development Plans (NDPIV) objectives 2:2:8 that focus at “enhancing human capital development along the entire life cycle, promoting empowerment and livelihood programmes for youth, women, children, elder persons, and People with Disabilities”. Also supported by the Government National Plan of Action for older persons that includes various interventions at various levels, which ensures improved quality of life of older persons in Uganda. ESUGA focuses on mainstreaming elder friendly and inclusive core strategies in its programs, right from project design to reporting and realization of project results. The
inventors of ESUGA are passionate about creating change in the communities where vulnerability of the elderly persons is at its peak by ensuring equal access to basic necessities in life and access to human rights through promotion, protection and realization of elderly person’s rights. ESUGA started its process of registration early 2022 and in May 2022 was registered with Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) as a company limited by guarantee dedicated
to promoting and protecting elderly people in Uganda. Later on ESUGA proceeded to the National level for registration and acquisition of permit from the Ministry of Internal Affairs
organ the Non- Governmental Organization Bureau to be registered and on 13th day of December 2023 was registered and got its permit on that very day as NGO. ESUGA currently has a staff capacity of 8 (Eight) human resource personnel who are currently voluntarily working for the organization. VISION
